British climber Adriana Brownlee scales K2

Adriana Brownlee
Adriana Brownlee, a 21-year-old British climber, has further improved her record of being the youngest climber to have summited most peaks of over 8,000 metres by scaling K2 — her 10th peak of over 8,000 metres — two more than Pakistan’s Shehroze Kashif.

Adriana has also become the youngest ever British climber to summit K2.

Her team confirmed that Adriana, along with Gelje Sherpa, summited K2 at 6:30am yesterday. She had attempted to summit the peak with supplementary oxygen but changed the plan.

“She went to C4 without O2 and plan was to summit with no O2 — but overnight snow meant Adri and Gelje had to trailblaze the route from C4 to the summit — so long and difficult,” Adriana’s team informed this correspondent.

“Gelje and I were actually going to attempt a summit without O2, however, after reaching 8,000 metres without sleeping, the snow in the night just didn’t stop and it was then impossible for us to trailblaze without O2. But now I know I can do it,” Adri posted on her social media.

Adri had earlier summited The Broad Peak and Nanga Parbat in Pakistan but it is unlikely she will summit Gasherbrum I and II this season.

The 21-year-old wants to become the youngest mountaineer in the world to summit all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres.

Gasherbrum I (8,080 metres) and II (8,034 metres) in Pakistan, Cho Oyu (8,188m) in Nepal and Shishapangma (8,027m) are the remaining mountains for her to achieve the title.

Pakistan’s Shehroze Kashif — who is one year younger than Adriana – has so far summited eight peaks of 8,000 metres and is currently on route to summit GI and GII.

If Shehroze manages to summit both this season, he will be able to surpass Adriana’s record of the youngest mountaineer to summit most eight-thousanders.

Like Adriana, Shehroze is also aiming to become the youngest mountaineer in the world to summit all the 14 peaks of over 8,000 metres in the world.

Adriana has climbed Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Annapurna 1, Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak and K2 whereas Shehroze has scaled Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Manaslu, Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak and Nanga Parbat.

Babar moves closer to becoming No.1 batter in all formats

Babar Azam
Babar Azam is one step closer in his quest of becoming the No.1 batter in all three formats of the game after the Pakistan captain inched closer to the top Test ranking on the latest MRF Tyres ICC Men's Player Rankings.

While the Pakistan skipper already holds top billing in both white-ball formats, the 27-year-old is yet to reach the summit at Test level and still trails England's Joe Root following the latest rankings update released by the ICC on Wednesday.

Root remains clear at the top of the Test list, but Babar rises one spot to third overall and to a career high rating of 874 points on the back of his tremendous century in the opening Test of Pakistan's ongoing series against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Babar scored almost 55 percent of Pakistan's first-innings runs during that Test, with the right-hander contributing 119 runs to a team score of 218 that ultimately helped the side keep in touch with Sri Lanka's first innings total of 222.

Babar recently said it was a dream of his to become the No.1 ranked batter in all three formats of the game and this rankings rise sees him move that little bit closer to achieving that very difficult goal.

The in-form captain wasn't the only Pakistan player to make an eye-catching move on the latest rankings, with star pacer Shaheen Afridi also jumping up a spot on the list for for Test bowlers.

Afridi picked up four wickets during the first innings of that Test against Sri Lanka and that catapulted him in front of India quick Jasprit Bumrah and into third on the bowler rankings.

Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique was named Player of the Match for his match-winning century in the second innings of that Galle Test and that saw him jump 23 spots to 16th overall on the batter rankings with 671 rating points.

Only two batters have had more points after six Tests – Sunil Gavaskar (692) and Donald Bradman (687). Shafique's 671 points are the most for a Pakistan batter after six Tests, the previous being Saeed Ahmed with 614 points.

Sri Lanka right-hander Dinesh Chandimal rises 11 places to 18th following scores of 76 and 94*.

Prabath Jayasuriya has climbed 11 spots to the 44th position with 481 points, the fourth-highest by any bowler after two Tests, after Narendra Hirwani (519), Alec Bedser (500) and Bob Massie (494).

There was no movement inside the top 10 on the latest T20I rankings following the completion of New Zealand's series in Ireland, but there were some changes on the updated ODI lists.

The ODI series between England and South Africa finished squared at 1-1 and it was in-form Proteas star Quinton de Kock that benefitted most as he jumped two places on the latest batter rankings.

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 246 runs in second Test, series ends 1-1

Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 246 runs in second Test
Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya grabbed five wickets as Sri Lanka thumped Pakistan by 246 runs in the second Test to end the series 1-1 on Thursday.

Chasing a mammoth 508 for victory, tourists Pakistan were bowled out for 261 in the second session on day five with skipper Babar Azam hitting a valiant 81 in Galle.

The 30-year-old Jayasuriya, a left-arm spinner, claimed his fourth five-wicket haul in just his third Test since making his debut against Australia earlier this month.

Ramesh Mendis, who took five wickets with his off-spin in Pakistan’s first innings, wiped off the tail with four more to trigger Sri Lankancelebrations.

The tourists won the opener with a Galle record chase of 342 and fought hard to outdo themselves, with the in-form Azam scoring his 23rd Test fifty and putting on brave stands with overnight partner Imamul Haq (49) and Mohammad Rizwan (37).

But Jayasuriya kept hitting back with regular strikes and got Agha Salman out for four at the stroke of lunch, then trapped talisman Azam lbw to end Pakistan’s resistance.

Ramesh struck on his first ball of the day to get Imam caught behind, with the left-handed batsman adding just three to his overnight 46.

Jayasuriya, who took one wicket on day four, cut short Rizwan’s stay on 35 with his left-arm spin. Fawad Alam was run out for one.

Azam survived Jayasuriya’s lbw call, which was given out by the umpire but successfully reviewed by the batsman, before the bowler claimed him for the third time this series.

Azam, who began the day on 26 and needed some physio help for lower back discomfort, has been in top form with the bat and scored 119 and 55 in Pakistan’s opening win.

Dhananjaya de Silva, who stood in as Sri Lanka captain with back pain keeping Dimuth Karunaratne off the field, set up victory with his 109 in Sri Lanka’s 360-8 declared.

Sri Lanka ended their innings on Wednesday afternoon with a monumental lead but the weather remained a concern for the hosts, with play ending early on days three and four due to bad light and rain predicted for Thursday afternoon.

Pakistan fell behind Sri Lanka by 147 runs after being bowled out for 231 in response to the hosts’ first-innings 378.

Bad light stops play with Pakistan chasing 508 in second Test against Sri Lanka

Bad light stops play with Pakistan chasing 508 in second Test against Sri Lanka
Bad light stopped play in the second Test in Galle with Pakistan on 89-1 in their mammoth chase of 508 against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Left-handed opener Imamul Haq, on 46, and skipper Babar Azam, on 26, were at the crease with more than 90 minutes and 26 overs of play left in the final session on day four.

Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya sent back first-match hero Abdullah Shafique for 16 with debutant Dunith Wellalage taking a good running catch at mid-off.

Dhananjaya de Silva hit 109 before Sri Lanka declared their second innings on 360-8 in the second session.

Tourists Pakistan, who won the first match of the two-Test series, face an almost impossible task if they are to make it 2-0.

They need to bat out over three sessions for a draw.

The West Indies hold the record for the highest-ever successful Test chase, 418 against Australia in 2003 at Antigua.

Sri Lanka had declared their second innings on 360-8 in the second session after resuming on 176-5.

De Silva made 109 before being run out at the non-striker’s end and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne called his batsmen back to the pavilion.

De Silva put on a key stand of 126 with overnight partner Karunaratne, a left-handed batsman who battled back pain during his knock of 61.

Beginning the day on 27, De Silva reached his ninth Test hundred with a cracking boundary off Mohammad Nawaz and raised his bat to the applauding dressing room.

Karunaratne fell in the first session after he escaped two close calls, which were unsuccessfully reviewed by Pakistan, off Nauman Ali’s left-arm spin.

Nauman finally got Karunaratne, caught at short leg, where Shafique took a sharp reflex catch.

Karunaratne, who had back spasms and did not field in the Pakistan innings, got help from the physio during his two hours and 45 minutes at the crease as he went past 6,000 Test runs.

Karunaratne bats through pain as Sri Lanka lead against Pakistan swells in Galle

Karunaratne bats through pain as Sri Lanka lead against Pakistan swells in Galle
Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne batted through pain to help the hosts stretch their overall lead to 323 runs and boost their chances of a series-levelling victory in the second test against Pakistan on Tuesday.

The hosts were 176-5 when bad light stopped play on day three with Karunaratne on 27 and Dhananjaya de Silva on 30.

Having conceded a lead of 147, Pakistan claimed four wickets in the second session but the 59-run stand between Karunaratne and de Silva put Sri Lanka in a strong position.

Earlier, Ramesh Mendis claimed 5-47, his third five-wicket haul in tests, as Sri Lanka bowled out Pakistan for 231 to secure a significant lead.

Resuming on 191-7, Yasir Shah and Hasan Ali batted resolutely to deny Sri Lanka any breakthrough in the first hour.

Once Prabath Jayasuriya (3-80) removed Hasan, however, Sri Lanka did not take long to polish off the Pakistan tail with Mendis dismissing Nauman Ali and Yasir.

Yasir faced 97 balls for his 26 and was the last man out.

Sri Lanka, having decided Karunaratne would bat only if required, sent Niroshan Dickwella into open with Oshada Fernando.

The stop-gap arrangement did not really work and Naseem Shah had Dickwella caught behind for 15.

Yasir struck with his first ball to dismiss Oshada (19) and was denied a second wicket when Babar Azam dropped a catch, his third spill of the match, to reprieve Kusal Mendis.

Kusal (15) could not capitalise on it, though, and Karunaratne walked out to bat after Angelo Mathews departed for 35.

Naseem sent back the in-form Dinesh Chandimal (21) soon after the tea break reducing Sri Lanka to 117-5 but de Silva and Karunaratne looked largely untroubled.

Pakistan pulled off a thrilling 342-run chase in the opening match to grab a 1-0 lead in the two-test series.

Ramesh grabs three to put Sri Lanka on top in second Pakistan Test

Ramesh grabs three to put Sri Lanka on top in second Pakistan Test
Ramesh Mendis led an inspired Sri Lanka spin attack to leave Pakistan in trouble at 191-7 in reply to the hosts' 378 on day two of the second Test on Monday.

The tourists, who lead the two-match series 1-0, ended the day still trailing Sri Lanka by 187 runs in their first innings at Galle.

Agha Salman resisted the bowling attack with his maiden Test 50 but fell to Prabath Jayasuriya's left-arm spin for 62 in the final moments of play before stumps was called.

Jayasuriya got Salman caught at slip with a drifter coming into the right-handed batsman.

Salman, who made his debut in the previous match, put on 46 runs with Yasir Shah, batting on 13, to lift Pakistan from 145-6.

Ramesh rattled Pakistan's middle-order with his off-spin bowling on a pitch expected to turn more from day three onwards.

Pakistan suffered from a lack of partnerships after losing first-match hero Abdullah Shafique for a duck and skipper Babar Azam for 16 on either side of the lunch break.

Jayasuriya, who took 21 wickets in his first two Tests, bowled Azam on a turning delivery that got the edge of the dangerman's bat to crash onto the stumps.

Imam-ul-Haq attempted to rebuild the innings with Mohammad Rizwan but Dhananjaya de Silva broke through with his off-spin to send back Imam on 32.

De Silva is standing in as captain in place of Dimuth Karunaratne, who did not take the field in the Pakistan innings because of back pain.

Rizwan hit a few boundaries to counterattack but Ramesh trapped him lbw for 24 and a review did not help the wicketkeeper-batsman, with replays showing the ball would have hit leg stump.

Pakistan had lost opener Shafique, who hit a match-winning 260 in the first Test when he inside-edged a delivery from Asitha Fernando onto his stumps.

Wickets kept tumbling but all-rounder Salman, who went wicketless in his six overs in Sri Lanka's innings, played the spinners on the front foot until his departure.

Sri Lanka had resumed the day on 315-6 in former captain Angelo Mathews' landmark 100th Test, with overnight batsman Niroshan Dickwella making 51 and a useful cameo of 35 by Ramesh at number nine.

Fast bowler Naseem Shah and leg-spinner Yasir claimed three wickets each to end Sri Lanka's innings in the first session

Pakistan find late wickets after Chandimal helps Sri Lanka past 300 on Day 1 of 2nd Test

Pakistan find late wickets after Chandimal helps Sri Lanka past 300 on Day 1 of 2nd Test
Dinesh Chandimal struck his fourth successive half-century to drive Sri Lanka’s total before Pakistan hit back with late wickets on Sunday’s opening day of the second Test at Galle.

Chandimal, who hit 80, put on key partnerships including a 75-run fourth-wicket stand with Angelo Mathews, who fell short of fifty in his landmark 100th Test.

Sri Lanka reached 315 for six when bad light stopped play for the day, with the hosts electing to bat first in their bid to bounce back from an opening loss in the two-match series.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Niroshan Dickwella, on 42, and debutant Dunith Wellalage, on six, were batting after pace bowler Naseem Shah struck with the second new ball.

Naseem bowled Dhananjaya de Silva for 32 and nearly got Dickwella on 24, but skipper Babar Azam dropped his second catch of the day, this time at second slip.

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz stood out for Pakistan with the two key wickets of Oshada Fernando, who made 50, and Chandimal.

Chandimal, who made 206 not out, 76 and 94 not out in his previous two Tests, handled the opposition spinners with aplomb until his departure on a pitch that turned on day one.

Mathews started well but failed to capitalise on a reprieve on 36 when Azam dropped an easy catch at extra cover off left-arm spinner Nauman Ali.

Ali came after the tea break to get Mathews caught behind, with the batsman walking back to a dressing room cheering his Test milestone.

Fernando and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne started with a 92-run opening stand before Nawaz broke through.

Fernando smashed Nawaz for six to reach his seventh Test half-century but got out caught behind on the next ball.

Kusal Mendis survived 11 balls and made three before being run out at the stroke of lunch off a direct throw from Agha Salman, while the batsman was backing up at the non-strikers’ end.

Karunaratne fell to Yasir Shah’s leg spin after his attempted reverse sweep went to backward point where Naseem took a sharp catch as Sri Lanka looked in trouble at 120-3.

Chandimal took stock with Mathews and then De Silva in a partnership of 63 but a wild slog got him caught at backward point off Nawaz.

Mathews, 35, was feted by Sri Lanka Cricket and accompanied by his family at the start of the Test for reaching his century of five-day matches since his debut at the same venue in 2009, also against Pakistan.

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja calls on Big Bash League to privatise to survive

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja
Australia batsman Usman Khawaja says the nation’s Big Bash League (BBL) needs to open up to private ownership if it is to survive in an increasingly crowded market for T20 cricket content.

The BBL, which runs from December to early-February 2023, will clash with South Africa’s new six-team T20 tournament starting in January.

Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners bought all six franchises in the South African league but the BBL’s eight teams are owned by governing body Cricket Australia and run by state associations.

A new league in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), also backed by IPL money, is scheduled to launch in January, setting the stage for intense battles for the world’s top players.

Khawaja said the BBL faced a “fork in the road” over the next year or two as competition heats up.

“There’s a lot of cogs that make the decisions but personally you shouldn’t be afraid of moving the game forward even if that means that you let go a little bit on the reins,” Khawaja told reporters on Friday.

“There are other tournaments starting up that are privatised.

“If you don’t keep up with that, and there’s a small window for the Big Bash to privatise in the next few years, and I’m afraid if we don’t do that we’ll fall behind.”

A number of top players have been nominated for the BBL’s inaugural draft, including star Afghan spinner Rashid Khan and West Indian T20 stalwarts Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo.

But Khawaja said others were steering clear.

“I’ve talked to a couple and they’ve not listed for the draft because they want to spend Christmas at home and then will go and play in the UAE,” he said.

“That’s a red flag for me already.”

Abdullah Shafique headed for top after Galle masterclass: Babar Azam

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday said that Abdullah Shafique can become one of the world's best Test openers after his epic century against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Shafique hit an unbeaten 160 to steer Pakistan home in a record chase of 342 at the picturesque venue as Pakistan won a tense opening Test in the final session on day five.

The 22-year-old batted for just under nine hours and five sessions against a spin attack led by the in-form Prabath Jayasuriya, who took a match tally of nine wickets.

"As a youngster, when you prove yourself and perform in tough conditions and difficult tracks, then it's good," Azam told reporters.

"His confidence was high after performing against Australia so he was on a different level. And to perform against quality bowling, your confidence goes up higher."

Shafique, who made 136 not out against Australia in Rawalpindi in March, recorded his second Test ton in just his sixth match since making his debut last year.

The right-handed batsman blocked, defended, drove and attacked in his 408-ball stay laced with seven fours and one six to win rich praise from the captain.

"The way he plays, so clean and with his focus, he will get many, many more such knocks," said Azam, who was involved in a key third-wicket stand of 101 with Shafique to set up the chase.

"I hope that he becomes one of the best openers in the world."

Shafique, who now averages 80 in 11 Test innings, put on 71 runs with wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan (40) and then an unbeaten final stand of 41 with Mohammad Nawaz, who made 19 not out.

The 27-year-old Azam also kept up his prolific run-scoring with a defiant 119 in the first innings and then 55 in the second to push Sri Lanka on the backfoot.

Azam rated his century as "special" among the eight Test hundreds he has hit in 41 matches.

"It was kind of special because the team needed it," said Azam, who batted with the tailenders in the first innings to help the team recover from 85-7 to 218.

"It was one of the best hundreds in Test matches (for me) because it was difficult. To play with tailenders you need double concentration to guide them and watch yourself as well. And I am happy that I did that."

Azam also lauded opposition spinner Jayasuriya for being their "main weapon" in just his second Test for Sri Lanka.

The second and final Test begins on Sunday, also in Galle.

Chandimal powers Sri Lanka’s lead past 300 in first Test against Pakistan

Chandimal powers Sri Lanka’s lead past 300 in first Test against Pakistan
Red-hot Dinesh Chandimal struck his second successive half-century to take Sri Lanka’s lead past 300 and thwart the Pakistan attack on day three of the opening Test on Monday.

The hosts were 329 for nine when bad light stopped play for the day in Galle.

Chandimal, on 86, and Prabath Jayasuriya, on four, were batting at close of play with Sri Lanka leading by 333 in their second innings.

Mohammad Nawaz claimed his maiden five-wicket haul and combined with fellow spinner Yasir Shah, who took three, to rattle the opposition middle-order in the second session.

But Chandimal, who struck blazing form with his maiden double century — 206 not out — in his team’s series-levelling Test win over Australia last week, stood firm in another lower-order show of defiance after the hosts slipped to 235-7.

He reached his fifty and put on 41 runs with Maheesh Theekshana for the ninth wicket in a repeat performance from the hosts, who had hit back from 133-8 to post 222 in their first innings.

Earlier Kusal Mendis made 76 and opener Oshada Fernando scored 64 and put on a key third-wicket stand of 91 to fight back after an early wicket in the morning session.

Oshada reached his sixth Test fifty in the first session but fell to Yasir on the second ball after lunch.

Kusal raised his fifty and took on the opposition attack with a few boundaries before Yasir bowled him with an unplayable delivery that pitched outside leg and turned to hit the top of off stump.

Nawaz, who is making a Test comeback after nearly six years and playing his fourth five-day match, kept chipping away and got key wickets including Angelo Mathews and Niroshan Dickwella.

He got nightwatchman Kasun Rajitha on the third ball of the day to set things rolling for Pakistan, but the Sri Lankan batsmen kept coming back on a pitch that is expected to offer more turn to the spinners come day four.

In a keenly contested match of tail-end fights, Pakistan had also hit back to post 218, riding on skipper Babar Azam’s 119 as he batted with his own lower order on day two.

Nasser Hussain all praise for Pakistani left-arm pacers

Nasser Hussain
Former English captain Nasser Hussain has praised Pakistani pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Amir, saying that Pakistan's left-arm pacers give India a tough time.

The statement came during the former cricketer's media talk after India bagged its first victory in an ODI series in England since 2014-15 by defeating the hosts by 5 wickets.

Hussain lauded India’s bench strength, asking them to not be “timid” and play fearlessly, but also advised the side's batters to learn how to face left-arm bowlers.

“India are a very strong team, but they need to learn from what happened in the past. In the last T20 World Cup in the UAE they were a bit timid with the bat, so they need to stop being that. When you have Pandya and Pant in the middle order and then Jadeja that rope to follow, you don’t need to be timid at the top,” he said when asked if the Men in Blue are prepared for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.

He highlighted a couple of events when Indian batting collapsed against left-arm bowlers.

“They need to play to left arm [pace bowling] a little bit better. History tells you that Shaheen Shah Afridi blew them away one evening in Dubai, Mohammad Amir blew them away one afternoon at the Oval in a final, and Reece Topley has blown them away here [at Old Trafford].

“They need to be a bit more tensed to their batting so some of their seamers will come down in a T20, in the last two overs with 20 to win. One of those seamers will need them to get across the line,” Hussain added.

Galle Test: Ton-up Babar leads Pakistan fightback against Sri Lanka

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam hit a century on day two of the first Test against Sri Lanka as the visitors were dismissed for 218 in their first innings.

Azam smashed spinner Maheesh Theekshana for a four and then took a single to bring up his seventh Test century as he leapt up in joy in the final session in Galle.

The leading Pakistan batsman averages over 45 in 40 Tests since making his debut in 2016.

Jayasuriya claimed his third successive haul of five wickets or more to rattle the opposition batting, which slumped to 85-7 before lunch and then 148-9 in the second session.

Azam stood firm as he got help from the lower-order batsmen including Yasir Shah (18), Hasan Ali (17) and Naseem, prompting Sri Lanka to rotate their bowling options.

Azam reached his 22nd Test fifty before Hasan departed and he then shielded number 11 Naseem by facing most of the balls in a defiant show of batting.

He hit fast bowler Kasun Rajitha for three straight boundaries and later a six and four off mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana and Jayasuriya to close in on Sri Lanka’s 222.

For Sri Lanka, it was a taste of their own medicine after they had fought back from 133-8 on Saturday, when Pakistan left-arm quick Shaheen Shah Afridi took four wickets.

Pakistan resumed the day on 24 for two when play started 30 minutes late because of rain and Azhar Ali could only survive three balls before he was trapped lbw by Jayasuriya.

PCB to ask ICC to regulate growth of T20 leagues

PCB
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Saturday that it has asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to devise a way to regulate the growth of lucrative Twenty20 leagues with rising concerns about its impact on the sport's calendar.

South Africa this week pulled out of a three-match bilateral one-day series in Australia in January as it clashes with their new domestic T20 competition.

The next cycle of the Future Tours Programme (FTP), which lays down which national sides play where and when, is set to be confirmed later this month at the annual conference of the ICC, the global governing body, in Birmingham.

Franchise cricket is likely to dominate the busy international calendar, which also includes ICC events like the World Cups in all formats.

"The growth of franchise cricket is impacting the already-crammed international cricket calendar," PCB chief executive Faisal Hasnain said in a statement. "The PCB is concerned about this development and wants the ICC to formulate a strategy on this issue.

"We have sent a proposal to the ICC, which they have added to their meeting agenda. Two other boards have also conveyed their apprehensions to the ICC on this matter and urged the ICC to create a working group to debate on the expansion of franchise-based T20 leagues."

The ICC has already accepted the new reality, with chairman Greg Barclay saying last month "there's not a lot we can do" about T20 leagues dominating the calendar.

The powerful Indian cricket board is negotiating an extended 10-week window for its popular Indian Premier League having sold the annual T20 tournament's 2023-2027 media rights for a staggering $6.2 billion last month. Read full story

"Finalising the FTP is very important for us," said Hasnain, with Pakistan only starting to host international cricket matches in recent years after a long hiatus due to security concerns.

"This will give us certainty about which teams will be visiting us and which countries we will be touring. 80% of the FTP has already been agreed upon and the remaining 20% will be completed in the upcoming meeting."

Pakistan restrict Sri Lanka to 222 in first Test innings

Pakistan restrict Sri Lanka
Pakistan’s pace sensation Shaheen Shah Afridi shined on Saturday as the Men In Green bowled out Sri Lanka for 222 in the first innings of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium.

The 21-yer-old claimed four wickets, including the crucial wicket of Dinesh Chandimal to put Pakistan in the driving seat in the first innings.

Following lunch, the left-arm pacer bowled out Dhananjaya da Silva after he scored 14 runs in 28 balls. In his next over, Niroshan Dickwella 4 (4) fell victim to Shaheen's fiery pace after he was caught by debutant Salman Ali Agha.

To add to the hosts' misery, young pacer Naseem Shah got the better of Ramesh Mendis 11 (41), who was fighting hard to make a comeback but was brilliantly sent back to the pavilion by the 20-year-old.

Mohammad Nawaz, who is making his comeback to the Test side, also took a wicket for his side after he trapped Prabath Jayasuriya for an lbw.

The danger-man Chandimal 76 (115), who top-scored for the hosts, was caught by Yasir Shah off Hasan Ali's bowl, but off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana didn't give up till he scored 38 runs in 65 balls, falling prey to Shaheen.

In the first session, a brilliant performance from Pakistan's bowling line-up helped the touring party reduce Sri Lanka to 80-4 at lunch.

Shaheen managed to give Pakistan an early breakthrough as he bowled Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne 1 (7) after he found an inside edge, which clattered the stumps.

In the fifteenth over, Yasir, who is making his comeback to the Test side, sent Kusal Mendis back to the pavilion, after scoring 21 runs in 35 balls.

In quick succession, Sri Lanka lost Oshanda Fernando, who had played decent innings of 35 runs, and was caught by Mohammad Rizwan off Hasan Ali's bowl.

Yasir struck again in the 21st over as he got the better of Angelo Mathews for a duck after facing 15 deliveries.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan in the first Test of the two-match Test series here at the Galle International Stadium.

All-rounder Salman Ali Agha will be making his Test debut for Pakistan, while Yasir Shah and Mohammad Nawaz have made their return for the national side.

Pakistan to play Test series in Sri Lanka despite emergency

Test Series
Pakistan will go ahead with the two-Test series in Sri Lanka despite a state of emergency having been declared in the island country.

Already in Sri Lanka, Pakistan wrapped up a three-day tour match in Colombo against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI in the backdrop of massive protests in the country due to the escalating economic crisis.

“The series will go ahead as planned,” a PCB spokesperson told Dawn on Wednesday, with the first Test set to be played in Galle from Saturday.

“The team is set to fly to Galle on Thursday and is very happy with the arrangements made by Sri Lanka Cricket.

“We are in touch with SLC and with the Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka regarding the situation.”

Last week, Sri Lanka concluded an all-format series against Australia, featuring Twenty20 Internationals, One-day Internationals and Tests.

Following Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fleeing the country amid protests, the island nation declared a state of emergency on Wednesday. Rajapaksa left the country on a military aircraft with his wife and two bodyguards and landed in the Maldives.

Making things complicated, thousands of people stormed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s palace as well on Wednesday. It has forced the country’s military to step in and urge people to refrain from doing so. With curfews in entire Colombo, Sri Lanka is in a state of turmoil and despair.

Sri Lanka’s national television network, Rupavahini, briefly suspended broadcast after protesters entered the TV station. The telecast resumed later.

Reports on Wednesday suggested that the Asian Cricket Council has also put Bangladesh on standby as hosts for the Asia Cup, which Sri Lanka was due to hold next month.

SLC chief executive Ashley de Silva said on Wednesday that not being able to host the Asia Cup would result in a loss of US$5-6 Million in revenue.

“Big revenues get generated by hosting teams like India and Pakistan,” de Silva was quoted as saying by the InsideSport website. “That’s why we are still trying to persuade the countries to play in Sri Lanka. For us revenues are critical. At this stage even for our country any incoming dollar is critical. We are all geared up to host the Asia Cup and we all are in a positive mood.”

Fake cricket league in India’s Gujrat dupes punters from Russia

Fake cricket league
A group of Indian locals tricked Russian gamblers by creating a "fake Indian Premier League" (IPL) in a remote village of Gujrat.

Per Indian media reports, police have arrested a group of locals who were involved in tricking Russian punters online.

The reports detailed that a "fake IPL" was created by the conmen and it was live-streamed in the Russian cities of Tver, Voronezh, and Moscow.

Communications with the Russian gamblers took place via Telegram and the first instalment of the bets — amounting to INR300, 000 — was delivered when the group was caught by police.

Police said that the mastermind of the fake league was Shoeb Davda (resident of Molipur, Gujarat), adding that he had previously worked in a Russian gambling pub for eight months.

"Shoeb hired the farm of Ghulam Masih and installed halogen lights there. He readied 21 farm labourers, promising them Rs400 per match. Next, he hired cameramen and bought t-shirts of IPL teams,” a police official told Indian media.

"Shoeb used to instruct umpires over a walkie-talkie to signal fours and sixes. Umpires communicated the same to the batsman and the bowler. Acting on the instructions, the bowler would deliver a slow ball, enabling the batsman to hit it for a four or a six," the official added.

A commentator from Meerut, with the talent of mimicking famous Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle, was also involved to strengthen the "authenticity of the fake IPL."

The news managed to gain the attention of Bhogle who laughed out at it.

"Can't stop laughing. Must hear this 'commentator'," the commentator wrote on Twitter.

Man Utd's Ten Hag rules out Ronaldo’s ‘sale'

Ronaldo
New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said Monday that Cristiano Ronaldo was “not for sale”, despite the Portuguese superstar skipping the pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

Ronaldo missed the start of training with the English Premier League giants last week due to a family issue.

The 37-year-old did not make the plane for the pre-season trip, with reports saying he wants to leave after United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Speaking before the Old Trafford club’s first pre-season friendly against Liverpool in Bangkok on Tuesday, Ten Hag said: “We are planning for Cristiano Ronaldo for the season and that’s it and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“I have read it, but what I say is Cristiano is not for sale, he is in our plans and we want success together.”

United’s new Dutch manager revealed he had spoken to the unsettled striker before the reports emerged last week that he wanted to leave.

“I spoke with him before this issue came up,” said Ten Hag.

“I had a conversation with him and we had a real good talk.”

However, he refused to be drawn on the substance of the conversation, stating that it was “between Cristiano and me”.

Ronaldo reportedly asked to leave after being unhappy with the club’s poor form since his return to Manchester last year — they finished sixth in the English Premier League, condemning them to the second-tier Europa League next season.

Ten Hag only arrived at United in May after finishing his successful spell at Ajax — but faces a huge challenge to rebuild the Old Trafford club which have not won a trophy since 2017.

Ronaldo scored 24 goals in all competitions last season and was named the club’s player of the year.

Ten Hag also said that England defender Harry Maguire would remain as club captain.

Mane or Salah? Who will bag African Footballer of the Year title

Mane or Salah?
Senegalese superstar Sadio Mane heads a list of 10 nominees for the African Footballer of the Year award, to be handed out later this month for the first time in three years, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.

Mane, who won the last award in 2019, will be favoured to win again after a season in which he helped Senegal to their first Africa Cup of Nations title plus qualification to the World Cup in Qatar.

He also had cup success with Liverpool at club level but has since moved to Bayern Munich.

His former teammates Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah are also among the 10 nominees, along with Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez. Salah won the award in 2017 and 2018 and Mahrez in 2016.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the decision to switch the qualification period from the calendar year to the 2021-22 season is the reason why there has been no award for the last three years, CAF officials told.

The winner will be decided by a judging panel made up of members of CAF’s technical committee, press and coaches and captains of Africa’s 54 national teams and will be announced at a gala in Rabat, Morocco on July 21.
