Nadal, on a quarter-final collision course with Novak Djokovic, brushed Australia’s Thompson aside 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 to improve his Roland Garros record to 106 wins and just three losses since his 2005 title-winning debut.
“I’m very happy with the victory today. I’m happy to get through in three sets,” said Nadal, seeded fifth. “It’s a first round, a positive match for me. Straight sets but with significant room for improvement.”
The Spaniard, who last week downplayed concerns over the recurrence of a foot injury that plagued him in Rome, meets Corentin Moutet in round two after the French wildcard defeated 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka.
American 13th seed Taylor Fritz, who missed the Madrid and Rome Open with injury, clinched a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Argentina Santiago Rodriguez Taverna.
Fritz’ compatriot Reilly Opelka, seeded 18th, lost to Filip Krajnovic in straight sets earlier.
Osaka, the unseeded four-time Grand Slam winner, was knocked out earlier in the day 7-5, 6-4 by Amanda Anisimova — the same player who ended the Japanese star’s title defence at the Australian Open this year.
Osaka served eight double faults and committed 29 unforced errors on her return to Roland Garros, after withdrawing in 2021 when she refused to honour mandatory media commitments before revealing she had been suffering from depression.
As rain stopped play on the outside courts for two hours, Krejcikova followed Osaka through the exit door, going down 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 to 19-year-old Frenchwoman Diane Parry in her first match since February following injury.
The Czech world number two had yet to play on clay this season after being sidelined by an elbow problem.
Iga Swiatek, the favourite for the women’s title, stretched her winning streak to 29 matches by dispatching Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko 6-2, 6-0 in 54 minutes.
The 20-year-old Swiatek, who took over as world number one following Ashleigh Barty’s shock retirement, has won her last five tournaments and is bidding for a second French Open in three attempts.
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka came back from a set down to prevail 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 in a gruelling three-hour battle against Ana Bogdan to advance to the second round, where she will meet Germany’s Andrea Petkovic.
Twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova rallied from 2-5 to take the first set against Hungarian Anna Bondar on the tiebreak before cruising through the second to triumph 7-6 (7-0), 6-1. She will meet Australia’s Daria Saville in the second round.
Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, who returned to action in April following a six-month mental health hiatus, moved into the second round with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure.
In Sunday’s late action, Spain’s 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz lived up to the mounting hype with a winning start.
Alcaraz, bidding to become just the eighth teenager to capture a major men’s title, defeated Argentine lucky loser Juan Ignacio Londero 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 without facing a break point on his Court Philippe Chatrier debut.
Widely tipped to end the dominance of 13-time champion Rafael Nadal and two-time winner Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz extended his season record to 29 wins and just three losses.
German third seed Alexander Zverev, a semi-finalist last year and who is scheduled to face Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, also eased into the second round with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win over Austria’s Sebastian Ofner, the world number 218.
In the women’s draw, Greek fourth seed and 2021 semi-finalist Maria Sakkari made the second round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over France’s Clara Burel.
Coco Gauff defeated Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino 7-5, 6-0, a day after the 18-year-old celebrated her high school graduation.
Leylah Fernandez, last year’s US Open finalist, defeated Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic 6-0, 7-5.

As the series will not be played in a Managed Event Environment, the selectors have decided to reduce the 21-player squad for the home Australia ODIs to 16 players.
Those left out of the squad from next month’s matches are Asif Afridi, Asif Ali, Haider Ali and Usman Qadir. Saud Shakeel was not considered as he is scheduled to undergo surgery for sinusitis.
The matches are scheduled at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on June 8, 10 and 12.
Babar Azam will continue to lead the side, while Shadab Khan, who missed the Australia ODIs due to an injury, has returned as vice-captain.
The squad will assemble in Rawalpindi on June 1 for a training camp and Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan, who are currently playing in the English County Championship, will join the squad in time for the practice sessions.
In this regard, Chief Selector Muhammad Wasim said: “As the ODIs against the West Indies are part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 qualification, we have decided to give the best chance to our side to collect maximum points and strengthen our chances of progressing directly for the pinnacle 50-over tournament. We have retained the same core of players so they further establish themselves in the format. I hope this bunch will continue the form they gained from the Australia series.
“Also, and taking into consideration that there will be no Managed Event Environment and the players can be called at a short notice, we have reduced the squad size to 16 players.
“For the Australia ODIs, we had also announced backup players as cover to those players who were dealing with injuries. Players such as Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan are now fully fit, which has allowed us to leave out Asif Afridi and Usman Qadir.
He said that Usman, along with Asif Ali and Haider Ali remain in the PCB’s plans for the shortest format as they have a series of T20I lined up this year, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
The squad includes three openers in Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq, three middle-order batters in Babar Azam, Iftikhar Ahmed and Khushdil Shah, two wicketkeeper/batters in Mohammad Haris and Mohammad Rizwan, two spin all-rounders Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan with Zahid Mahmood as a wrist spinner and five fast bowlers in Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Wasim Junior, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shahnawaz Dahani.
Pakistan boasts three batters inside the top-15 of ICC player rankings with Babar sitting on top of the tree, followed by third-ranked Imam-ul-Haq and 12th-ranked Fakhar Zaman. Amongst the bowlers, Shaheen Shah Afridi is the highest-ranked player in the seventh position.

Pep Guardiola's side were teetering on the brink of blowing the title after falling 2-0 behind midway through the second half at the Etihad Stadium.
But Ilkay Gundogan sparked an astonishing City revival as the German midfielder reduced the deficit before Rodri grabbed the equaliser.
Gundogan turned in City's third goal in the space of five minutes in the 81st minute, triggering wild celebrations and rendering second-placed Liverpool's 3-1 victory against Wolves irrelevant.
City finished with 93 points, one ahead of Liverpool as they ended their rivals' hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple.
On a breathtaking final day, Burnley were relegated as Leeds beat the drop, while Tottenham qualified for the Champions League at the expense of their north London rivals Arsenal.
It was City who hogged the spotlight on a day their fans, who spilt onto the pitch in delight, will never forget.
Guardiola's men can rightly be called a dynasty after joining Manchester United as the only club in the Premier League era to have won four titles in five seasons, with Alex Ferguson's teams doing it on three separate occasions.
The eighth league title in City's history is Guardiola's ninth major trophy since arriving at the club in 2016.
"It was an unbelievable game," Gundogan said.
"It was about getting that goal and then the momentum was on our side. These are the days you look back to."
Once again, City saved the best until last as they edged Liverpool out on the final day of the season for the second time after beating them to the finish line in 2019.
It was 10 years since Sergio Aguero's famous last-second goal against QPR sealed City's first title since 1968 and this jaw-dropping success was almost as unlikely.
Guardiola had called on City's fans to be "loud, loud, loud" in their bid to retain the crown, but they were stunned into silence in the 37th minute.
Lucas Digne whipped in a cross from the left and Matty Cash got in front of Joao Cancelo to score with a bullet header.
Former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho doubled Villa's lead with a cool finish in the 69th minute.
The shell-shocked Guardiola slumped into his seat, but City would not surrender and Ilkay Gundogan headed them back into contention in the 76th minute.
Rodri's low strike from the edge of the area two minutes later set up a nerve-jangling finale.
And in the 81st minute, Kevin de Bruyne's low cross reached Gundogan at the far post and the substitute tapped home to send City into ecstasy.
Having already won the FA Cup and League Cup, Liverpool can still enjoy a memorable season of their own if they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final in Paris on Saturday.

France’s Stephanie Frappart, Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda, and Japan’s Yoshimi Yamashita are among the 36 match referees.
Brazil’s Neuza Back, Mexico’s Karen Diaz Medina and American Kathryn Nesbitt have been included in the 69 assistant referees.
“We are very happy that ... we have been able to call up female match officials for the first time in the history of a FIFA World Cup,” said FIFA Referees Committee Chairman Pierluigi Collina.
“This concludes a long process that began several years ago with the deployment of female referees at FIFA men’s junior and senior tournaments.
“In this way, we clearly emphasise that it is quality that counts for us and not gender. I would hope that in the future, the selection of elite women’s match officials for important men’s competitions will be perceived as something normal and no longer as sensational.”
All match officials for the finals will participate in early summer seminars in Asuncion, Madrid and Doha.
“We can’t eliminate all mistakes, but we will do everything we can to reduce them,” said Massimo Busacca, FIFA’s Director of Refereeing.

A source within the PCB said the NZC also agreed to play five additional Twenty20 internationals and five one-day internationals in May next year.
"These 10 matches are in addition to the two Tests and three ICC Super League ODIs, which will be played in December-January," the source added.
The New Zealand cricket team had arrived in Pakistan on September 11 last year after 18 years to play three ODIs and five Twenty20 Internationals.
The Kiwis had, however, devastated Pakistan's cricket fraternity on Sep 17 by opting out of their tour of Pakistan minutes before the first ODI was to be played. They had cited a 'security threat' as the reason without divulging any further information. The tour cancellation was followed by England also deferring their tour.
The PCB had in December announced that the "NZC has confirmed to tour Pakistan for two Tests and three ODIs in December-January 2022-23 as part of the Future Tours Programme and will return in April 2023 for 10 white-ball matches to make up for the September 2021 abandoned tour."
In a briefing to Senate Standing Committee on Inter-Provincial Coordination in October last year, PCB chief Ramiz Raja had said: “I have written a strongly-worded letter to the International Cricket Council chairman where I mentioned that the ICC has become a political wing of the Western bloc and has been reduced to a mere events management company."
Ramiz had added that he felt the decision by New Zealand was politically motivated.

Mott, 48, won Twenty20 world cups in 2018 and 2020 and the 50-over equivalent earlier this year during his seven-year stint with the Australian national side.
He also guided the team to a record 26 successive one-day international wins and victory over England in the recent multi-format Ashes series.
Mott, who has previously worked in the English county game with Glamorgan, takes over an England men's side who are the reigning 50-over world champions and currently second in the one-day international and T20 rankings.
England's new managing director Rob Key said the Australian's mentality dovetailed with that of World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan.
“What he has been able to do with them (Australia's women's team) I don't think should be underestimated,” said Key, who was appointed as part of a management revamp following England's embarrassing 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia.
“He has made the gap greater between (Australia and) the rest of the pack in the women's game.”
England now have separate head coaches in red and white-ball cricket for the first time since 2014, with former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum announced last week as their Test match chief.
Mott is expected to begin his England reign with three one-day internationals away to the Netherlands next month.
“It was always going to take something special to leave the role that I have loved for the past seven years with the Australian women's team,” Mott said in an England and Wales Cricket Board statement.
“However, I genuinely believe that the time is right to play a role in helping the England men's ODI and T20 group continue to evolve as one of the best teams in the world.
“The idea of the split roles and the chance to work alongside Brendon McCullum in his red-ball role is an opportunity that I am incredibly enthusiastic about. “
BCB’s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus has announced, adding that Pakistan is likely to be the third team, and the series is going to be held in Christchurch.
Before reaching New Zealand, Bangladesh will travel to Australia for a weeklong camp in Adelaide, where they will play T20 practice matches against local sides. This will be in September. The dates for the tri-series haven’t been announced yet, but the likeliest window is between late September and early October. The World Cup starts October 16, with the Super 12s, of which Bangladesh and New Zealand are a part, starting October 22.
“We will play more than 16 T20 matches [before the T20 World Cup],” Yunus said at a press interaction.
“We will not need a separate camp, since this is itself a lot of preparation. We will be holding a camp in Adelaide for a week, before heading to New Zealand to play the tri-nation tournament,” he said.
“Each side will play a minimum of four matches in New Zealand. The third team may be Pakistan, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet,” he added.
Meanwhile, it is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan will welcome England cricket team in Pakistan in October 2022 for seven- T20I series.

Since the turn of the year, managing director of men's cricket Ashley Giles, head coach Chris Silverwood and Test captain Joe Root have all been replaced, with the ECB chairmanship currently vacant as well.
Clare Connor, currently managing director of England women's cricket, will take over on an interim basis, the ECB announced on Tuesday.
Root resigned last month following England's 1-0 defeat in the West Indies, which left them with a miserable record of just one win in 17 Tests, and has been replaced by all-rounder Ben Stokes.
Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum was last week appointed as a coach while former England batsman Rob Key is the new managing director.
Harrison, who took up his role in 2015, oversaw the introduction of the controversial city-based Hundred competition, which started last year, and during his tenure, England won both the men's and women's 50-over World Cups.
The 50-year-old faced calls to quit over the ECB's handling of a racism scandal that came to light last year.
Harrison said it had been a “huge honour” to serve as chief executive.
“Cricket is an extraordinary force for good in the world and my goal has been to make the game bigger and ensure more people and more communities in England and Wales feel they have a place in this sport,” he said.
“The long-term health of cricket depends on its ability to grow and remain relevant and be more inclusive in an ever-changing world.”
Martin Darlow, interim chairman of the ECB, said: “When the (coronavirus) pandemic struck, it was Tom's leadership that brought the game together and saved us from the worst financial crisis the sport has ever faced.
“He has always put the interests of the game first and worked to lead important change to make our game more accessible and inclusive, though we all know there is still much more work to do “

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Friday it would announce the national one-day international (ODI) squad for the West Indies — slated for June — on May 23.
The discussions on finalising the squad are underway, but the final announcement will be made later this month followed by a training camp that will be set up from May 29 or June 1 in Rawalpindi, the PCB said in a statement by the cricket board.
Later on, PCB said it would announce squads for the tour of the Netherlands and Sri Lanka on June 13.
Pakistan will tour the Netherlands for three ODIs, whereas only two Tests are scheduled in Sri Lanka after the ODI leg of the tour was scrapped due to the schedule of the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
The PCB also confirmed that Multan would be the backup option to host the COVID-19 protocol-free West Indies series as the board keeps an eye on the political situation in the twin cities — Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
This month, Pakistan women vs Sri Lanka women — three ODIs and three T20Is series — will also take place without any COVID-19 SOPs.
The 35-year-old fighter, who became a unified world champion at light-welterweight, hangs up his gloves with a record of 34 wins from his 40 fights.
The 2004 Olympic silver medallist won the first 18 contests of his pro career, becoming one of the finest British boxers of his era.
Khan's career ended in defeat when he was stopped in the sixth round of his grudge match against long-time rival and compatriot Kell Brook in Manchester in February.
Brook announced his own retirement last week.
“It's time to hang up my gloves. I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years,” Khan wrote on his Twitter account.
“I want to say a heartfelt thanks to the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me.”
Khan became world champion in 2009, defeating Ukraine's Andriy Kotelnik in a WBA super-lightweight bout and saw off US opponent Zab Judah to add the IBF belt two years later.
A controversial points loss against American Lamont Peterson later in 2011 brought Khan's reign to a frustrating end.
Khan, who also challenged for world titles at welterweight and middleweight, lost to Mexico's Saul Alvarez in 2016 and was also stopped by American Terence Crawford in 2019.

“It is truly an honour for any cricketer to captain their country and it is a great privilege for me to continue in this role. The 2022-23 cricket season is the busiest for Pakistan women’s side and we are excited and geared up for the challenges it presents," Bismah said on her retention.
“Every match in the upcoming season is important for us as a team as bilateral ODIs will determine whether we qualify for the next ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and the T20Is provide us opportunities to prepare for the all-important T20 World Cup in February next year." the statement issued by the PCB read quoting the skipper.
It is worth mentioning that Bismah made her Pakistan debut at 15 against India in an ODI at Jaipur in December 2006. She is the only Pakistan women cricketer with 5,000 international runs. She took the reins of the T20I side in 2016 and was named the ODI captain after the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
The skipper thanked the PCB for its immense support throughout her career, "especially in helping me strike the right work-life balance after the birth of Fatima."
"There was a time when I contemplated giving up on my passion for playing cricket, but the PCB ensured it never came to that with the introduction of the maternity policy, which has made the game as inclusive as it can be for the women in our country. I also want to thank my family and especially my husband, Abrar, who has been a great support throughout my career, and has provided me encouragement to continue to play for Pakistan.”
Speaking on the occasion, Head of Women’s cricket Tania Mallick said: “I want to congratulate Bismah Maroof on her retention as the leader of the national side. She has been an inspiration for women around the world with her demeanour on and off the field and I am sure our side will produce strong and consistent results in their leadership over the next year.”

The 45-year-old former Test wicketkeeper was facing charges of racism, laid by CSA, which could have resulted in his dismissal.
The controlling body admitted in a statement that there was “no basis to sustain any of the disciplinary charges”.
The allegations against Boucher followed Social Justice and Networking hearings last year into discrimination into cricket.
Boucher was accused by former teammate Paul Adams of leading a song with racially derogatory words during fines meetings after matches while they were playing.
Adams announced on Sunday that he was not prepared to testify at the hearing, stating his comments to the SJN ombudsman related to the overall culture of the team rather than any particular player.
CSA noted in its statement that Boucher had apologised to Adams and the apology had been accepted.
It was also alleged that Boucher had sidelined his black assistant coach Enoch Nkwe, leading to Nkwe's resignation, but Nkwe was also unwilling to testify at the planned hearings.
A further charge was that Boucher had failed to deal effectively with controversy over “taking the knee” in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.
CSA said its lawyers had consulted with other potential witnesses and concluded that none of the three charges were sustainable.
The recent exoneration of director of cricket Graeme Smith, who like Boucher had been the subject of “tentative findings” by SJN ombudsman, Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza, “fortified the conclusion that the charges against Mr Boucher would be dismissed.”
Board chairman Lawson Naidoo said CSA had been committed to treating issues raised at the SJN hearings “with utmost seriousness” with a view to ensuring fairness.
“The decision to withdraw the charges brings about finality on these issues for CSA and Mark and allows the focus to return to the cricket field.” Boucher is contracted until the end of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
CSA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki acknowledged that it had been a difficult time for Boucher.
“CSA regrets this. CSA is also appreciative of the fact that Mark has at all times conducted himself properly and professionally,” said Moseki.
Leading South African businessmen had assembled a high-powered legal team to defend Boucher.
The lawyers had made an official request for the disciplinary hearing before Advocate Terry Motau to be held in public.
