The towering left-arm quick has signed to play for the English county club, based at the London ground — the game's spiritual home.
“It's every cricketer's dream to come here and play at the home of cricket,” Afridi told reporters at Lord's on Wednesday ahead of Middlesex's match against Leicestershire.
Afridi has already starred at the ground, taking 6-35 against Bangladesh during a 50-over 2019 World Cup match.
“Now I want to take 10 [wickets in an innings],” he said with a smile.
“When you play for your country you always feel proud and that came against Bangladesh so it was a good game for me as well.
“As a youngster, you're playing in a World Cup game and you take six wickets so yes, it's a big high for me and one of the best memories for me.”
Rising star
Afridi, one of the rising stars of world cricket, with 95 wickets in 24 Tests at an average of 25, is set to play his maiden first-class match at Lord's, having made his Middlesex debut away to Glamorgan last week.
Middlesex, who play in the second division of the County Championship, won that match by an innings and 82 runs, with 22-year-old Afridi taking four wickets.
“The first game, everywhere you go, is crucial,” said the paceman, who twice dismissed Australian Test star Marnus Labuschagne in the match — after taking his wicket three times in the recent Test series between Australia and Pakistan.
Afridi's captain at Middlesex is another Australia batsman in Peter Handscomb.
“It's nice being on this side, definitely,” said Handscomb, 31, who last played Test cricket in 2019.
“Not so nice in the nets, but out in the middle it's nice having him on your team.
“That first game, the energy he had running in, the pace on the ball.
“He always wanted another over, so that energy is great to see from someone just coming in. The boys loved him, loved everything that he brought.
“I hope that's a good sign to come for the next few games.”
Afridi is getting acclimatised to English conditions in more ways than one.
“Last week I felt cold, but it's really good for me here. I spent time with my cousin and friends and my teammates as well in the first game and we really enjoyed that time.”
Afridi's time in England will take him around the country but there is one location that counts above any other, as far as he is concerned.
“Lord's is the one ground I like. Everything comes second after Lord's.“

Mehidy has been a regular starter for Bangladesh in Tests and is the country s third-highest wicket-taker in the format as well as a useful lower-order batsman.
Bangladesh Cricket Board physician Manzur Hossain told AFP that the 24-year-old fractured his right little finger during a domestic match at the weekend.
"The X-ray revealed a fracture in his finger. Usually it takes around four weeks to recover so he is definitely ruled out of the first Test and is also uncertain for the second Test against Sri Lanka," said Manzur.
The first Test is in Chittagong from May 15 to 19. The second Test will be held in Dhaka from May 23 to 27.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Sunday that two independent arbitrators found in Smith’s favour on three issues during his time as captain and later director of cricket.
In a statement, Smith said: “I’m grateful that my name has finally been cleared. I’ve always given South African cricket my utmost, as a player, captain and administrator over the last 20 years.
“So to hear these baseless allegations of racism being made has been extremely difficult, both for me and my family.
“It has been exhausting and distracting, not least because South African cricket has also been going through a well-publicised rebuilding process which has required a lot of attention.
“I am just pleased that we have now gone through a robust arbitration process before independent arbitrators and I have been completely vindicated.”
The allegations against Smith were made during a Social Justice and Nation Building process, set up by CSA. They were conducted by an ombudsman who made “tentative findings” that he recommended should be investigated further.
The claims against Smith were that he showed discrimination against black wicket-keeper Thami Tsolekile, preferring to select the white batsman/wicket-keeper A.B. de Villiers for series against England, Australia and New Zealand; that he was racially biased against black leadership at CSA and in the choice of Mark Boucher as head coach of the national team.
The arbitrators went into detail on all three matters in a 95-page report, released by CSA on Monday, and exonerated Smith on all three counts. Costs were awarded in his favour.
David Becker, Smith’s attorney, said the former captain had been the target of “a multitude of opportunistic claims and insinuations made before the SJN which were not properly tested and which were clearly false.”
Becker said the “serious and defamatory” claims had been made “by a small group of individuals with an obvious agenda to tarnish his good name and have him removed as director of cricket.”
Smith’s contract as director of cricket expired at the end of March.
“It is a testimony to his character and leadership that he has held his head high throughout this process, focused on the job at hand and continued to play a highly significant role in assisting South African cricket,” said Becker.
CSA board chairman Lawson Naidoo paid tribute to Smith.
“Now that finality on these processes has been reached, it is appropriate to recognise the extraordinary contribution that Graeme has made to South African cricket, first as the longest-serving Test captain and then as director cricket from 2019 to 2022.
“His role as the DOC has been critical in rebuilding the Protea men’s team in particular and has laid a solid foundation for his successor.”

Juergen Klopp’s side had to work hard to break Everton’s stubborn resistence in a fractious Merseyside derby at Anfield.
They couldn’t muster a shot on target until Scotland defender Andrew Robertson scored with a second-half header.
Divock Origi’s late strike ensured Liverpool kept the pressure on champions City, who had crushed Watford 5-1 on Saturday to move four points clear at the top.
With five games left for both Liverpool and City, the title race looks destined to go down to the wire.
Liverpool, trying to become the first English club to win all four major trophies in one season, now turn their attention to Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Villarreal.
Frank Lampard’s men were dumped into the relegation zone by Burnley’s 1-0 win against Wolves earlier in the day.
They sit two points behind Burnley with a game in hand as they try to avoid playing in the second tier for the first time since 1954.
The turning point came when Klopp sent on Belgian striker Origi in the second half.
In the 62nd minute, Origi combined with Mohamed Salah, who crossed to the far post for Robertson to head his second goal this season.
Origi grabbed the second goal with a close-range header in the 85th minute as Liverpool made it 12 wins from their last 13 league matches.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea looked set for more angst on home turf when Jorginho’s penalty was saved by Lukasz Fabianski.
But Christian Pulisic came off the bench to inspire third-placed Chelsea, lifting them seven points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham in the fight to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish.
In the 87th minute, Thiago Silva flicked a header towards Romelu Lukaku, prompting Craig Dawson to concede a penalty with a pull on the substitute.
Dawson was initially booked before being sent off after a VAR check, but West Ham United avoided further punishment as Jorginho’s weak spot-kick was easily saved by Fabianski.
Pulisic spared Jorginho’s blushes in the 90th minute as the United States forward met Marcos Alonso’s cross with a clinical low finish from 10 yards.
Burnley boosted their bid for a remarkable escape act as they moved into 17th place thanks to Matej Vydra’s 62nd-minute strike from a Wout Weghorst cross at Turf Moor.
James Ward-Prowse scored twice as Southampton came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Brighton.
Smith and current head coach Mark Boucher were among a number of CSA employees implicated in "tentative findings" made by the Social Justice and Nation Building Ombudsman last year into alleged discrimination within the sport s national governing organisation in the past.
Read more: Australia appoints Andrew McDonald as cricket coach
Boucher has been accused of racism by former team mate Paul Adams and of sidelining his former assistant coach Enoch Nkwe. He denies both allegations and will face a CSA disciplinary hearing on charges of gross misconduct next month.
The panel concluded that there was no evidence that Smith, also a former captain of the national side, racially discriminated against former player Thami Tsolekile between 2012 and 2014, or that he was biased against Black leadership at CSA.
It added that there was no merit in the allegation that Smith favoured Boucher over Nkwe during the selection process for head coach in 2019.
"The manner in which these issues have been dealt with... confirms CSA s commitment to deal with the SJN issues in a manner that treats them with utmost seriousness but also ensures fairness, due process and finality," said Lawson Naidoo, chair of the CSA board.
"Now that finality on these processes has been reached, it is appropriate to recognise the extraordinary contribution that Graeme has made to South African cricket."
The 41-year-old Smith s tenure as director of cricket ended at the end of last month.

The result was a scoreless draw after an Afghan goal was disallowed for being offside in a lower league amateur match in the eastern state of Victoria.
But for the Afghan women it was a powerful, symbolic victory as they returned to the pitch together after leaving their homeland to rebuild their lives in Australia.
The game showed that the Taliban could not stop the players, said team captain Nilab, who like her teammates did not give a family name so as to protect relatives living in Afghanistan.
“We still continue our fight and our combat just to play for the Afghanistan people,” she told AFP.
“We fled the country but we are still thinking of our country and we are still working for our victory for our country.”
Australia helped dozens of Afghan national women's team players and their relatives to escape when the Taliban swept back to power eight months ago.
The Taliban have since severely curtailed the freedoms of women, banning girls' education and preventing women from even boarding planes without a male relative.
As players fled to different countries, the women's national team was fragmented.
'Together and powerful'
But many settled in and around Melbourne, capital of the eastern state of Victoria, where professional A-League Women's side Melbourne Victory helped them to return to the field.
Goalkeeper Fatima said people who had seen social media images of Afghanistan after the Taliban's return could understand something of the courage required by players to leave their homes.
“They can understand how hard and how challenging that was for all of us to be in that situation,” she told AFP.
“Today, we are playing as a team and together and powerful. It's incredible.”
Team coach Jeff Hopkins praised their performance against amateur Melbourne side ETA Buffalo SC — a club established in 1982 by friends who had migrated from East Timor — in the Football Victoria State League 4 West competition.
“These young women, all they want to do is to be given the chance to just be treated equally, to be able to play the game they love,” Hopkins told AFP.
“That obviously wasn't happening for them in Afghanistan — they were being persecuted for it,” he said.
A few days ahead of Sunday's match, Melbourne Victory presented the Afghan Women's Team with their new predominantly red kit, complete with shirts showing off the Afghan national flag.
The shirts are marked with numbers but no names for the safety of players' families in Afghanistan.

The 32-year-old batter is representing county Derbyshire. He played a knock of 219 off 268 deliveries against Leicestershire on Friday to score his second consecutive double-century. In the previous match, he had scored 239 against Sussex.
Masood is the first Pakistani batter to score two consecutive double centuries in two innings in the county championship.
He is the 2nd Pakistani batter to do so in first-class cricket after Arshad Parvez, who had scored 243 (vs Baluchistan) and 236 (vs MCB) in BCCP Patron’s Trophy in 1978.
The last time any Asian batter was able to score back-to-back double centuries in the county championship was before partition, in 1933, when Nawab Iftikharuddin scored 231 and 224 in 1933 for Worcestershire.
Masood was overlooked for Test matches against Australia. However, he has proved to be in the best form of his life by amassing overall 611 runs in just four innings he has played in the county championship this season.

The assurance was needed amid speculations regarding Ramiz’s future at the helm following Shehbaz Sharif’s election as prime minister — automatically making him PCB’s patron — after his predecessor Imran Khan was ousted from office via a no-confidence vote.
“If he’s so assured, it must mean he has support from someone who has the power to appoint or remove him has communicated something,”.
However, sources in the government said that the a list of candidates aspiring for the role is lying on Shehbaz’s desk at the Prime Minister Office and that Ramiz may quit anytime.
In the PCB’s constitution, the patron has no power to oust the chairman. However, in many decisions of the honourable courts of Pakistan, it has been declared that a person who has the power to appoint anyone also has the powers to withdraw their names.
Therefore, Shehbaz may withdraw the nominations of both Ramiz and Asad Ali Khan — another board member nominated by Imran — if they don’t step down voluntarily.
Shehbaz is most likely to bring back former PCB chief Najam Sethi, who was at the board’s helm when the now premier’s brother Nawaz was the head of government. Sethi resigned when Imran took office after the 2018 general elections.
During Sethi’s tenure, the PCB successfully launched the Pakistan Super League and the national team won their maiden Champions Trophy in 2017.
Sources said a good number of candidates are lobbying for the coveted post and among them some former cricketers are also included.
Traditionally, a change of prime minister is followed by the election of a new PCB chairman, a position for which
the country’s premiers have always handpicked their favoured individuals.
Imran did the same when he took charge back in 2018, nominating former International Cricket Council president Ehsan Mani for the post.
After Mani’s three-year term, Imran brought in Ramiz, who was unanimously elected as the PCB chief in September last year.
Ramiz, since he assumed the charge, has shown no hesitation in expressing his ambitions for Pakistan cricket.

Thomas Tuchel’s side had to work hard to break Palace’s stubborn resistance in the semi-final at Wembley, but Loftus-Cheek’s ferocious strike put them on course for a third successive FA Cup final appearance.
Mount put the result beyond doubt with a fine finish of his own, ensuring Chelsea of a date with Liverpool in the final at Wembley on May 14.
It will be Chelsea’s fifth FA Cup final in the last six years as they look to make amends for losing in the showpiece against Arsenal and Leicester in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
In their 16th FA Cup final, Chelsea will aim to win the competition for the ninth time and first since 2018.
It was a welcome tonic after Tuesday’s painful Champions League quarter-final exit at Real Madrid, where the Blues scored three times to overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit only to go out after extra time.
Tuchel has won the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup in his reign, but he is yet to lead Chelsea to a domestic trophy.
With three consortiums in the running to buy Chelsea following the British government’s sanctions on Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich after the invasion of Ukraine, the Blues could have a new owner by the time they return to Wembley.
Beating Palace keeps them in contention to end a troubled season with silverware, although Liverpool, who beat Premier League leaders Manchester City 3-2 in Saturday’s semi-final, will provide far tougher opposition.
Tuchel made just three changes despite his players’ mental and physical fatigue after the draining defeat in Madrid, leaving Thiago Silva, N’Golo Kante and Loftus-Cheek on the bench.
Chelsea had beaten Palace twice without conceding a goal in the Premier League this season, but they looked flat in the first half.
Faced with a Palace side that were tigerish in the tackle and well-drilled in their low defensive block, Chelsea found it hard to impose themselves.
It took Tuchel’s men 25 minutes to muster a chance and even then Kai Havertz’s looping header was easy for Palace keeper Jack Butland.
They lost Mateo Kovacic to an injury moments later, with Loftus-Cheek introduced against the team he once played for on loan.
Tuchel grew agitated as Chelsea laboured to take control and the German turned away in frustration after Cesar Azpilicueta made a hash of an acrobatic attempt to volley Timo Werner’s cross.
Palace were nearly rewarded for their gritty display just before half-time.
Cheikhou Kouyate’s drive from the edge of the area was pushed out by Edouard Mendy and Joachim Andersen slammed the rebound against the post from close range.
Chelsea had more possession in the second half, although Kouyate went close again, heading narrowly wide from Eberechi Eze’s corner.
Crucially, Conor Gallagher was unavailable to face Chelsea after Palace failed to persuade his parent club to give the England midfielder special dispensation to play.
That robbed Palace of the guile needed to carry more of a threat and, to their credit, Chelsea never lost their patience.
They finally took the lead from just their second shot on target in the 65th minute.
Loftus-Cheek picked out Havertz in the Palace area and the German clipped a pass back to the midfielder, who slammed a superb strike past Butland from 12 yards.
Chelsea had a spring in their step at last and Mount finished Palace off in the 76th minute, taking Werner’s pass in his stride before slotting past Butland with ease.

In the Premier League, West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek scored his fifth league goal of the season to cancel out Burnley forward Wout Weghorst’s first-half strike and snatch a 1-1 draw against their managerless opponents at the London Stadium.
Soucek pounced to level the scores after a curling free kick by Manuel Lanzini glanced off Weghorst and into his path in the 74th minute to deny Burnley caretaker Mike Jackson a first win after they sacked long-serving boss Sean Dyche on Friday.
The result also denied 18th-placed Burnley the opportunity to close the gap on Everton above them to one point, heaping the pressure on the team with seven matches left in the season to avoid the drop to the second-tier Championship.
Burnley grabbed the lead shortly after midfielder Ashley Westwood was taken off on a stretcher following a serious right leg injury, as Weghorst rose highest to nod in a rebound after Jay Rodriguez headed on to the crossbar from a corner.
The visitors then squandered an opportunity to double their advantage as Maxwel Cornet dragged his penalty wide following a staggered run-up, having won the spot kick after a challenge by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski in the box.
In the other match, Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes grabbed a glorious stoppage-time winner with the first headed goal of his career as the hosts beat Leicester City 2-1 to take another vital step towards preserving their Premier League status.
Guimaraes struck twice to secure the victory that moved Newcastle up to 14th place on 37 points, 12 above Burnley in 18th spot having played a game more, with Leicester now just three points ahead of the Magpies in ninth. The Foxes went in front after 19 minutes from a cleverly-worked corner, the ball driven low into the box and pulled back for Ademola Lookman to fire goalwards, with his shot squirming under the body of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into the net.
Guimaraes levelled for Newcastle on the half-hour mark with the first of his two goals, poking the ball over the line from between the legs of keeper Kasper Schmeichel.
The goal was initially disallowed but, after a pitch-side VAR review, referee Jarred Gillett reversed his decision and allowed it to stand. Neither side created much of note until the dying moments, when Joe Willock broke down the left before crossing for Brazilian Guimaraes, who threw himself at the ball to head it into the net, to delight the home crowd.

In an interview with foreign media, Shoaib Akhtar said that he was offered the lead role in the Indian movie, adding that later the role was played by Imran Hashmi.
"I had an offer to play the role of Imran Hashmi in Gangster. I think I should have done the film," the 46-year-old said.
Comparing himself with young pacers, the “Pindi Express” said that they are not like him, adding that neither do they have long hair nor can they bowl fast enough.
"Fast bowlers don't even strike the ball on the head, and I think fast bowlers should injure the batters," he remarked.
He said that Adam Gilchrist's wicket in the 2002 Test match is his favourite wicket over Rahul Dravid's in Calcutta in 1999.
During his cricketing days, Shoaib Akhtar said that Saqlain Mushtaq was his best friend.
"I have beaten Saqlian out of love. He has proved to be the best spinner in the world," Akhtar added.
He claimed that he can deliver the ball at a speed of 145 kilometres per hour even now but after a knee surgery and three months of training.
Akhtar holds the record for the fastest bowl ever bowled in the history of cricket.
"I have bowled faster than 161.3 km per hour, and I have bowled faster than 163 km per hour in my career."
Appreciating the national cricket team skipper, Akhtar said that Babar Azam is the best batsman of this era.

Root's decision comes after the 1-0 Test series defeat to West Indies last month, and a 4-0 Ashes loss to Australia.
“After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England men's Test captain,” Root said.
“It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me, I know the timing is right.
“I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the past five years with enormous pride. It has been an honour to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket.”
Root, 31, holds the record for the highest number of wins as England's Test captain, his 27 putting him one ahead of Michael Vaughan and three ahead of Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss.
But the past 12 months have been dismal. After winning their opening three Tests of 2021, England have won just one since, losing 11 and drawing five of their past 17.
ECB chief executive officer Tom Harrison said: “Joe has been an exceptional role model during his tenure, balancing the demands of Test captaincy whilst continuing to shine brilliantly through his own personal performances.
“He has led by example, and that has resulted in more Test wins than any other England captain, alongside a number of famous series home and away victories."

McDonald, 40, secured a four-year contract after winning praise for his performance as interim coach since Langer's abrupt resignation on February 5 shook the cricket world.
He takes on one of the highest-profile jobs in Australia, where cricket is an essential part of the country's identity and the team's exploits grip much of the nation.
“It's an exciting opportunity, exciting role, and I am really happy, happy and grateful,” McDonald told reporters after being confirmed in the job by Cricket Australia.
McDonald returned last week from the side's successful Pakistan tour where they won the Test series and the sole Twenty20 (T20).
Langer left after failing to win the public support of key players including captain Pat Cummins, despite guiding Australia to a 4-0 Ashes victory over archrivals England and a maiden T20 World Cup title.
Langer was also credited with overhauling a toxic Australian cricketing culture that led to the 2018 “Sandpaper-gate” ball-tampering scandal.
In the run-up to Langer's departure, disgruntled players had complained anonymously to Australian media about his intense coaching style.
'Fantastic job'
By contrast, limited-overs captain Aaron Finch had praised former Test allrounder McDonald's “calm approach”.
“He never seems to get flustered by any situation or result — it's all about the process and making sure your preparation and attention to detail is 100 per cent,” Finch told reporters shortly after McDonald took over in the interim role.
Cricket Australia said McDonald will be head coach in all formats but some white-ball series may be led by an assistant to alleviate the “significant workload ahead”.
“I think he will do a fantastic job,” former Australia Test captain Michael Clarke said on Tuesday on the eve of McDonald's widely anticipated appointment.
He warned, however, that Australia would be under pressure to perform with McDonald, who had been an assistant to Langer since 2019.
“To me, it looks like this is exactly what the players want, which puts extra pressure on them if they don't perform,” Clarke said in an interview with Sky Sports Radio.
As captain, Cummins in particular would face “extreme pressure”, Clarke predicted.
“He's had Justin Langer sacked, pretty much ... he's come out and said this is what the players wanted,” Clarke said.
Cummins has denied that a player revolt was behind Langer's resignation, saying he had tried to show respect for “proper process” by not intervening publicly to support or criticise him.
McDonald, who has red hair and was inevitably nicknamed Ronnie, played four Tests for Australia with his biggest knock a 68 against South Africa.
A right-arm fast-medium bowler and a handy right-handed batter, he also played for Victoria and South Australia before turning to coaching, starting as head coach with English county side Leicestershire in 2014.
“Andrew has done an outstanding job as interim head coach and has had a positive impact on the squad,” said Cricket Australia executive general manager of high performance Ben Oliver.
“I am looking forward to supporting Andrew and the team as we plan for an exciting period, which includes tours to Sri Lanka and India, a T20 World Cup and the home summer before an away Ashes series. “

The star player bagged the monthly award and defeated West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Australian skipper Pat Cummins.
Babar continued his brilliant performance throughout March, with his superb 196 in the second Test against Australia in Karachi and became the first player to win the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award on two occasions, having won the title in April 2021.
In the recently concluded Benaud-Qadir Trophy, Babar Azam finished as the third-highest run-scorer after Usman Khawaja and Abdullah Shafique. In his five outings, he scored 390 runs at an average of 78, including two half-centuries and a century. The highlight of the series was his match-saving 196 in the second innings of the second Test in Karachi.
The Pakistani captain continued his outstanding form in the ODI series, playing vital knocks in the first two games. In the first ODI, he notched up a score of 57 in Pakistan's 88-run loss before scoring a brilliant 118 to lead Pakistan to a six-wicket win in the second contest.
"Babar Azam wins this award not only because of his significant glut of runs scored during the Pakistan v Australia tour, he was able to transition success with the bat across formats, from the Test Series into ODIs," said former West Indies star and member of the voting panel Daren Ganga.
"Significantly, him being able to fulfil the burden of expectation as a captain and batsman for Pakistan being host to an Australian team visiting after 24 years is a monumental achievement."

The blockbuster showdown in Manchester will likely play a key role in deciding the outcome of the title race as a City victory would give them a four-point lead with seven games left while Liverpool would overtake their rivals with a win.
"Two teams fighting for the Premier League, very close on points," Foden told Sky Sports. "It's the biggest game and the game that all footballers want to play in.
"I think there (are) going to be a lot of neutrals watching it as well. It's going to be an entertaining game."
City's 14-point lead over Liverpool in January has been reduced to just one point after Juergen Klopp's team won 10 consecutive league matches.
Key statistics provided by Nielsen's Gracenote showed a victory for City would improve their chances of retaining the title to 86% while an away win for Liverpool would give them a 68% chance of reclaiming it. read more
"I think it will feel better if one of us just wins instead of someone running away with the league," Foden said.
"Both teams are going at it and it's not over with this game and there's going to be lots of ups and downs, I believe, before the end of the season."

In an interview, Gul started the conversation by stating that Pakistan did not capitalize on the home advantage.
"We lost the Test series because we did not capitalize on the home advantage. Our spinners should have performed better but the pitches were extremely flat. If you play at home then you need to ensure that you maximize on that advantage but we did not do that," he said.
Read More: Imam-ul-Haq makes his way to top 3 in ICC ODI batting rankings
Commenting on the ODI series, Gul said Pakistan addressed all the issues they faced in the opening match in the remainder of the two games.
"Our comeback in the ODI series was extremely good. We made several mistakes in the first ODI but team management and players eradicated those mistakes in the next two ODIs. We had a huge problem of run rate in the first game but the players worked on that and Babar, Imam, and Fakhar all played more aggressively, which is exactly what was required," Gul stated.
The 37-year-old said that there were clear selection problems throughout the series.
"Throughout the series, Pakistan had a bit of problem with the selection. Some players were out of form and did not have rhythm but they were not rested, especially because we had strength on the bench. Some were only featured in one game but were left out from the rest - this indicates a lack of future planning," he explained.
Pakistan's premier bowler, Hasan Ali, has failed to live up to his reputation in recent times and Umar Gul said that he should have been rested instead.
"Hasan Ali has singlehandedly helped Pakistan win matches but he came back after an injury following the PSL. It happens to players sometimes that they are out of form. Once you don't have the rhythm and you don't get wickets, it frustrates you as a bowler. Pakistan should have rested him and kept Naseem Shah in the team because he bowled extremely well in the opening Test match," he added.
Gul further added that Shahnawaz Dahani should have been given a chance in the series: "If they did not want to continue with Naseem then Pakistan also had Dahani on the bench and we could have used his services in the games."
The selection problems, according to Gul, kept piling up as Saud Shakeel was dropped from the third match after not playing on his number in the previous match.
"Shaheen is Pakistan's main bowler but in the future, the management needs to balance the load on him. Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim and Shahnawaz Dahani can share his workload and he can continue to perform for a longer period."
The flamboyant batter reached the third spot while star batter Babar Azam remains on top.
Referring to the recent Pakistan vs Australia series, the statement also said: "Pakistan players make major movements in the @MRFWorldwide ICC Men's Player Rankings for ODIs and Tests after #PAKvAUS series."
Earlier, Haq had taken over the 10th spot from the 12th after scoring 103 runs in the first ODI on 96 balls.
During the one day series, Haq scored two centuries and 89 runs in the third match of the series.
AFP Sports highlights five things we learned from the first full tour to Pakistan by a top Test playing nation since the fatal attack on a Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009.
safe to tour
A full-strength Australia squad were greeted by head of state-style security with hundreds of policemen and military personnel guarding their hotels and routes to the grounds.
The matches passed off without incident in Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore and the players, despite also being under strict Covid protocols, were even able to get out for a round of golf.
Pakistan will be hoping the successful Australian tour has paved the way for England and New Zealand to return after both called off series in Pakistan last year citing unspecified security concerns.
Pitches fail the Test
The Test series was blighted by flat pitches that offered nothing for the bowlers.
The opening match, on a Rawalpindi pitch deemed "below average" by the International Cricket Council, saw just 14 wickets fall as 1,187 runs were eked out in a bore draw.
The second Test pitch in Karachi was also slow and low and saw drama only in the final session of the final day when a late flurry of wickets saw Pakistan hang on for a draw.
Then it took Cummins bold declaration with almost two days play remaining in Lahore to earn Australia a win and the series on another placid pitch.
At least the batsmen-friendly surfaces made for more of a spectacle in the white ball games.
The highlight was Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq both scoring centuries as Pakistan thrillingly completed a record ODI run chase of 349 with an over to spare in Lahore to keep the series alive.
Be prepared
Australia were able to compete when they stepped into the unfamiliar territory of Pakistan because of meticulous research and preparation that even included studying domestic match performances in detail.
The result was an Australia squad able to cover every eventuality.
The tourists had variety in their spin and fast bowling options, and selected experienced batsmen who could adapt to the conditions -- including Pakistan-born Usman Khawaja, one of the tour s big success stories.

The three ODIs were originally scheduled to be a part of the West Indies tour to Pakistan last December but were rescheduled after five positive Covid-19 cases, including three players, were reported in the visitors' team in a day. Consequently, the team had left after playing three Twenty20 Internationals.
Prior to that, another three players from the team had tested positive during the tour.
The PCB announced last month that the West Indies would arrive in Pakistan on June 5 to play the postponed ODI matches in Rawalpindi on June 8, 10 and 12.
The PCB chairperson said the matches could be played in "normal conditions". He, however, acknowledged the risk attached to taking the step.
But, Raja said, the PCB's medical board was looking into the matter in a different way.
"The only problem [that may entail the decision] is that if one player contracts Covid. It (the virus) spreads so rapidly that it would be impossible to call replacements from so faraway (the Caribbean)," he pointed out, adding that "in a seven-day window, one case could impact the entire series".
"It's a double-edged sword," he remarked.
But the "information we have received from our medical board shows that things can be a bit relaxed [now] since the virus isn't that bad anymore," the PCB chairperson added.
His statement comes after three players from the Australian team, which visited Pakistan after 24 years and concluded the tour yesterday, tested positive for the coronavirus.

Pakistan have included Asif Ali in place of Saud Shakeel while Australia made one change in the final XI bringing in Jason Behrendorff in place of Mithcell Swepson.
Speaking after the toss, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said he was confident of winning the series after beating the visitors in the second ODI.
Pakistan after an 88-run defeat from Australia in the opening match bounced back strongly and levelled the series with a record run-chase.
The second match was a high-scoring affair and the hosts managed to hold their nerves to finish on a winning note.
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam won the toss and opted to bowl first. But the home team saw Travis Head, who hit a century in the first match, continue in the same style, as he scored 89 at the top of the order.
Ben McDermott, who hit a half-century in the first match, improved his game further and scored his maiden ODI century to help his side post a mammoth 348 on the board.
Shaheen Afridi, who returned for the second game of the series, picked up four wickets. It was an uphill task for Pakistan but opener Imam-ul-Haq and Babar hammered brilliant centuries and then Khushdil Shah’s cameo helped Pakistan reach the target with an over to spare.
Australia must be in a fix as to what had happened in the second match that slipped away from their hands.
Pakistan have seen their batters perform and all they now need is their bowlers to create an impact to dictate terms.
