Pak vs Aus : PCB, CA and security agencies investigate and dismiss threat against Ashton Agar

Pak vs Aus : PCB, CA and security agencies investigate and dismiss threat against Ashton Agar
Following the incident of a “death threat” being received by the family of Australian spinner Ashton Agar, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Cricket Australia, and government security agencies have begun an investigation in this regard.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, a message was sent to Agar’s partner, Madeleine, on social media, which was immediately reported to CA and the PCB.

The cricket board, however, clarified that "extensive security plans are in place for this type of social media activity."

Earlier today, in a bid to sabotage Australia’s historic tour of Pakistan, a person from India had reportedly sent threats to the family of an Australian cricketer and had warned them of "dire consequences" if the player travels to Rawalpindi, security sources have revealed.

According to the international publication, the team spokesperson confirmed Agar was the subject of the death threat, but team security has investigated and does not believe it is a “credible threat”.

Taking notice of the viral news, Cricket Australia issued a statement saying that Cricket Australia is aware of a social media post, of which the nature and content have been investigated."

“There are extensive security plans in place for this type of social media activity, which — in this case — is not considered a risk. No further comment will be made at this time," the Cricket Australia statement read.

CA has also confirmed in a statement that a social media post was sent. The governing body says the threat is “not a risk”.

“Cricket Australia is aware of a social media post, of which the nature and content have been investigated by the PCB, CA, and combined government security agencies,” the statement read.

“There are extensive security plans in place for this type of social media activity, which, in this case, is not considered a risk. No further comment will be made at this time.”
the family of the Australian cricketer was sent threatening messages via a fake Instagram account —jyot.isharma391. The messenger warned him against playing in Pakistan.

The security sources said that the Instagram account was being handled from India’s Gujarat state. Providing further details of the account, the well-informed sources said that the Gujarat-based Mridul Tiwari, who is working as an environmental, health, and safety officer at the IMC Limited, has issued threatening messages to the cricketer’s family.

His e-mail address is mridul.tiwari07.com, while his phone number is 00917060185885.

India had been using "notorious tactics" in the past to make Pakistan a no-go zone for international cricket, sources said.

Earlier, West Indian cricketers were also issued threats to stop them from visiting Pakistan. The players had talked about the threats on social media and had asked their followers whether they should be opting for the Indian Premier League (IPL) or the Pakistani tour.

New Zealand and England Cricket Board (ECB) had cancelled their scheduled tour after receiving the same types of threats.

Australia, however, expressed satisfaction over the foolproof security arrangements made by the Pakistan Cricket Board for the tour.

PSL7: Lahore Qalandars defeated Multan Sultans by 42 runs in Final

Lahore Qalandars
Lahore Qalandars on Sunday put up a clinical performance to defeat Multan Sultans by 42 runs and secure their first Pakistan Super League (PSL) in seven editions.

Although Lahore had handed Multan a stiff 181-run target, still they were required to be at their best both with the ball as well as in the field.

And, they just did that. Once again skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi deployed Mohammad Hafeez early, and he didn't disappoint as he removed the in-form Mohammad Rizwan for 14 runs with the score of 36 runs in four overs.

Fakhar who failed with the bat, but was light wire in the field as he ran out Shan Masood with a brilliant direct-hit, and also took a great catch of Aamer Azmat to reduce Multan 46-3.

Asif Afridi was removed four runs later, and the dangerous Rilee Rossow was sent back for 15 by young pacer Zaman Khan as Multan's batters were falling like a pack of cards.

Khushdil Shah and Tim David smashed some boundaries, but they had a huge task against a world-class bowling attack of Lahore. Khushdil was bowled by Haris Rauf, while David was sent back by Shaheen after Fakhar took a great diving catch.

After that Willey, Tahir, Rumman was removed in the wink of an eye, as Tahir was the last man to go when Rauf took a great catch, and the entire Gaddafi Stadium erupted in joy.

Among the bowlers, Shaheen took three, Hafeez and Zaman two, while Wiese and Rauf one as Lahore won their maiden PSL crown.

Earlier, Lahore Qalandars had handed a 181-run target to Multan Sultans.

Lahore, after electing to bat first, got off to the worst possible start as they were reduced to 25-3 in 4.2 overs. The in-form Fakhar Zaman was removed for just three runs by Asif Afridi with Shahnawaz Dahani taking a great catch, while Abdullah Shafique was also removed by Asif.

After that, Mohammad Hafeez showed his experience and class as he steered the ship for Lahore by playing sensibly. With Kamran Ghulam, he forged an important 54-run partnership to steer the inning.

Hafeez took the attacking mode as he went after the opponent bowlers, and was finally removed for 69 runs by Dahani. He scored those runs off 46 balls with one six and nine fours.

After, his dismissal Harry Brook and David Wiese registered a 43-run stand in just 2.4 overs as they went rampant against the Multan bowlers.

Wiese remained not out for 28 runs off just eight balls with three sixes, while Brook scored 41 runs off 22 balls.

In terms of bowling for Multan, Asif was the stand out bowler with brilliant figures of 3-19 in four overs, while leggie Imran Tahir gave away just 22 runs in a wicket-less four-over spell. Dahani went to the cleaners in the late overs as he ended with figures of 1-34 in three overs. Rumman Raees conceded 35 runs in just two overs.

Multan Sultans: Mohammad Rizwan (c, wk), Shan Masood, Aamer Azmat, Rilee Rossouw, Tim David, Khushdil Shah, David Willey, Asif Afridi, Rumman Raees, Imran Tahir, Shahnawaz Dahani

Lahore Qalandars: Fakhar Zaman, Abdullah Shafique, Kamran Ghulam Mohammad Hafeez, Zeeshan Ashraf (wk), Harry Brook, David Wiese, Samit Patel, Shaheen Shah Afridi (c), Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan

Qalandars take second shot at title against high-flying defending champions Sultans

Qalandars take second shot at title against high-flying defending champions Sultans
Lahore Qalandars are not used to making it to the HBL Pakistan Super League playoffs, but when they do, they end up playing the grand finale.

In the 2020 season, they finished third in the round-robin stage before losing the final against Karachi Kings at the National Stadium in Karachi.

The match was played behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 outbreak which forced the tournament to be split in two phases.

This season, led by Pakistan pace bowling spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi, the Qalandars managed the second spot in the league round and will play the final against Multan Sultans on Sunday, after emerging winners in a nail-biting Eliminator 2 against Islamabad United on Friday.

The venue, however, will be the Gaddafi Stadium here and that too fully occupied by spectators, almost all of whom will be expected to be behind the Qalandars, their home side.

Both teams have won once each playing against each other at the venue this season.

The Qalandars were triumphant against the Sultans in the round-robin stage — the former becoming the only team to beat the defending champions this season — while the Sultans struck back in the Qualifier on Wednesday to make it to the all-important decider.

The Qualifier saw the Qalandars struggle with the bat while chasing and their batting line-up collapsed after they lost Harry Brook, and most importantly their talisman Fakhar Zaman in quick succession right after the Strategic Timeout, taken after the 13th over.

By that point, Fakhar was flying high after launching an onslaught against the Sultans’ strike spinners Imran Tahir and Khushdil Shah before pacers Shahanawaz Dahani and David Willey finished the Qalandars off.

In Eliminator 2, the Qalandars had to fight it hard till the very end but this time, they looked less dependent on in-form Fakhar, who departed in the first over.

David Wiese, who struck 27 runs to help the Qalandars to 168-7 and prevented United from scoring the required eight runs in the last over, was the hero of the match.

Top-order batters Abdullah Shafique and Kamran Ghulam too chipped in with crucial runs to help the Qalandars fight back after losing early wickets. Ghulam was also electric in the field and so was pacer Haris Rauf, who also took the all-important wicket of United’s opener Alex Hales.

The Sultans will come into the final with utmost confidence, especially after how they countered the Qalandars in the qualifier.

Nearly all their top players have proven their match-winning ability during the tournament under Mohammad Rizwan’s inspirational captaincy. The Pakistan wicket-keeper/batter, who was named the ICC T20 Player of the Year last month, has not only shone as a leader but as batter as well.

The right-hander is the second-highest run-getter this season after Fakhar with 532 runs at a fabulous average of 76.00. The third in the batters list is Shan Masood with 459.

Sultans’ spinners Khushdil and Tahir and pacer are third and fourth and fifth, respectively in the bowling charts with 16 wickets each. Qalandars’ skipper Shaheen (17) and pacer Zaman Khan (16) are second and sixth but the Lahore outfit will have to do it all over again without their main spinner Rashid Khan.

The Afghan leg-spin sensation is on international duty for the ongoing series in Bangladesh. According to some reports which emerged early on Saturday, the Qalandars tried to arrange a chartered flight for Rashid to make him available for the final before the effort fizzed out due to obvious logistical issues.

Although it was outrageous on the Qalandars’ part to even think about the possibility, it is understandable for a team playing the final to want a bowler who has claimed 13 victims in nine outings at just 17.30.

Shaheen will have to rely on the more orthodox Mohammad Hafeez, specially with the number of left-handers in the Sultans side. The other option is also a veteran in Samit Patel.

Warhorse Hafeez was exceptional with the ball in the Qualifier, conceding just 16 in his four overs while also dismissing Shan. But with the bat, he remains a liability with an average of just above 24 in 12 innings, and will definitely be expected to finally contribute when it’s needed the most on Sunday.

For the Sultans, Singaporean-Australian power-hitter Tim David is likely to return for the final after recovering from coronavirus. The big right-hander has averaged above 40 in 12 outings and scored at a strike-rate of more than 199.

South African southpaw Rilee Rossouw also remains a force to reckon with for the Qalandars’ bowling attack as he looks to finish with the HBL PSL trophy what has been a terrific season for him with the bat.

While Multan Sultans ride on their highly-professional style, Lahore Qalandars will rely on some bright, young talent, and, obviously, the roaring, jam-packed Gaddafi Stadium stands.

Australian cricket team reaches Pakistan for first tour in 24 years amid tight security

Australian cricket team reaches Pakistan
The Australian cricket team, headed by skipper Patrick James Cummins, reached Pakistan Sunday night for the first time in 24 years. Australia last visited Pakistan in November 1998.

During the tour, the Aussie men will take on Green Shirts in three Test matches, the same number of ODIs and one T20. The first match of the Test series will begin on March 4 in Rawalpindi. It will be followed by Tests in Karachi and Lahore before three ODIs and a single T20, all in Rawalpindi.

Senior batsman Steve Smith posted a picture on Twitter of the 35-strong Australia tour party inside their charter flight's cabin after it touched down in the Pakistan capital, Islamabad.

Pakistan have struggled to attract visiting sides since a fatal terror attack on the visiting Sri Lanka team's bus in 2009. Australia pulled out of a tour five years earlier after a suicide blast at a Lahore church.

They last played in Pakistan in 1998, winning the three-Test series 1-0 and blanking the hosts in the three one-day internationals.

Having been forced to play their home games abroad -- mostly in the United Arab Emirates -- Pakistan appeared to have reassured international cricket authorities last year with both New Zealand and England scheduled to tour.

But the Black Caps hastily departed in September just minutes before their first match was due to start, citing security fears, and England postponed tours by both their men's and women's teams soon after.

The decisions incensed Pakistan cricket authorities, who felt they had done everything possible to ensure safety and security.

Those who arrived in Pakistan today include Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith (vc), Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc and others.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials welcomed the players upon arrival at the Islamabad International Airport.

Test schedule:

March 4-8 — First Test, Rawalpindi

March 12-16 — Second Test, Karachi

March 21-25 — Third Test, Lahore

Pakistan squad

Babar Azam (captain), Mohammad Rizwan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Azhar Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Fawad Alam, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Nauman Ali, Sajid Khan, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, and Zahid Mahmood.

Australia squad

Cricket Australia has already announced an 18-member Test squad.

Pat Cummins (c), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, and David Warner.

Australia 'comfortable' with security on eve of Pakistan tour

Australia 'comfortable' with security on eve of Pakistan tour
Australian Test skipper Pat Cummins said on Friday his team were “comfortable” with security arrangements and excited by what lies ahead, as Australia prepare to jet into Pakistan on their first tour since 1998.

They are due to leave over the weekend ahead of the first of three Tests in Rawalpindi on March 4 — giving them less than a week to acclimatise and without any warm-up matches.

It will be followed by Tests in Karachi and Lahore before three ODIs and a single Twenty20, all in Rawalpindi.

“We've got to a place where everyone hopping on the plane is comfortable with where it's all sitting. It's been a really thorough body of work that the security and the logistics teams have worked through,” Cummins said.

“And obviously the added layer of bio-security in these times as well. So we're feeling really good and once we get over there, we're going to be able to just concentrate on the cricket.

“More than anything it's a really special tour,” he added. “We're going to fly over there and experience something for the first time. We're really excited, everyone is in a good place.”

Cricket-mad Pakistan endured a long spell without a visit from an international team following a terror attack on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan side in Lahore in 2009.

Pakistan were forced to play home international matches abroad — mostly in the United Arab Emirates — until 2015, when normal service tentatively resumed.

But concerns surfaced again last year when New Zealand quit their first tour to the country in 18 years shortly before the opening match was due to start following a security alert.

Australia head into the series on the back of a 4-0 Ashes thumping of England over the home summer, with the starting XI for Rawalpindi expected to be much the same.

Usman Khawaja — who was born in Pakistan — is set to partner David Warner at the top of the order ahead of Marcus Harris, who was dropped during the Ashes.

Cummins confirmed Steve Smith had recovered from a concussion during their recent Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka and will retain his place.

Otherwise, the side is set to mirror the one that faced England in the fifth Test last month — with Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitch Starc providing pace and Nathan Lyon spin.

However, interim coach Andrew McDonald — in charge after Justin Langer quit after the Ashes — admitted there had been “educated guesses” of how the pitches would play with two extra spinners in Mitchell Swepson and Ashton Agar also in the squad.

“So we're covering all bases there, from turning wickets to potentially wickets with grass on (them),” he said.

“But we feel the squad's balanced and there's enough options for whatever the case may be when we land on the ground.”

The squad has spent the past few days at the Melbourne Cricket Ground preparing, with a spin net set up and the pacemen practising reverse swing, both of which will likely be a factor on the sub-continent.

“We don't really know what to expect over there, sub-continent Test matches can be played slowly or quickly,” said Cummins.

“For a lot of this group, we haven't played a lot of cricket overseas but if we want to be number one in the world we have got to have a really good showing on these sub-continent tours.”

Australia Test squad: Pat Cummins (capt), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Mark Steketee, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner.

Australia ODI and T20 squad: Aaron Finch (capt), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Ben McDermott, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.

PSL7: Multan Sultans defeated Islamabad United by six wickets

PSL
Even though Multan Sultans defeated Islamabad United by six wickets, the Mohammad Rizwan-led side's slow innings ensured that their opponent make it to the playoffs in the 29th match of the ongoing seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Multan was given a 106-run target by United after Islamabad skipper Asif Ali elected to bat first at the toss. Going in the match Islamabad United needed to win the game if they wanted to make it to the playoffs easily.

However, Quetta’s win over Karachi Kings by 23 runs had tipped the odds in United’s favour. The Asif Ali-led side needed to ensure that Sultans do not reach the target in 3.5 overs, which they completed.

Sultans needed one player to stand till the end, as the pitch was difficult to bat at, and Multan skipper Mohammad Rizwan stayed till the end to complete the chase.

Sultans lost Shan Masood (4) and Amir Azmat (4) in the third over in the space of four balls. While Kushdil Shah also went cheaply for two runs in the fifth over.

In the eighth over Tim David also went to the pavilion putting Sultans at 43/4. However, Rizwan dug in deep with David Willey to take Sultans past the finishing line in the 18th over.

Rizwan ended the innings with a six and remained not out on 51 while Willey also stayed till the end with his 28 runs.

For Islamabad, Liam Dawson picked three wickets while Zahid Mahmood picked one wicket.

Earlier, a masterclass from the Multan Sultans helped their side restrict Islamabad United at 105 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.

United made a slow start to their innings and lost Mohammad Huraira and Dawson within the powerplay. Huraira was dismissed by Asif Afridi in the third over, while Willey removed Dawson in the sixth over.

By the time the powerplay ended United had made 41 and lost two wickets.

Sultans continued mounting pressure on the United batters and by the halfway of the innings they were 49/3.

In the next five overs, Sultans bowlers dismissed Azam Khan, Asif Ali, Danish Aziz to further dent the United’s innings. All three batsmen were dismissed in single figures with United reaching 70/6 by the 15th over.

Islamabad was looking to get dismissed within 100 runs but Muhammad Musa’s crucial 26 runs helped their side reach 105 for the loss of 7 wickets.

PSL7: Lahore Qalandars beats Islamabad United by 66 runs

psl
Lahore Qalandars brilliant bowling helped the team ensure they beat Islamabad United by 66 runs in the 27th match of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2022 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Requiring 198 runs to win the game, United started well but lost two wickets in quick succession. Both their openers, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Mubasir Khan, got out one after the other with just 27 runs on the board.

All the Qalandars bowlers were on the money with tight lines and lengths and they never let the United batters settle down. Liam Dawson showed some fight with well-made 31 runs, while Azam Khan got out for 10 runs. Skipper Asif Ali also failed to play a big knock getting out for 12 runs off Zaman Khan's bowling.

Danish Aziz remained not out for 30, as United was never in the capacity to even get close to the 198-run target against a brilliant Qalandars bowling attack.

While in terms of bowling all the bowlers contributed. Shaheen picked 2-28, Zaman 2-32, Rashid Khan 2-19, and Haris Rauf 2-33 in their four-overs spells.

Earlier, Lahore Qalandars had posted a mammoth 197-run total for the loss of seven wickets.

The Qalandars posted the huge target for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs, courtesy of Harry Brook's sensational 102 and a well-made fifty from Fakhar Zaman after team skipper Shaheen Afridi elected to bat first.

Qalandars started their innings poorly, as United removed their three batters for just 12 runs on the board, with Faheem Ashraf doing the damage with the new ball.

But after that, Fakhar and Brook led Lahore's recovery by putting up a 101-run stand. Fakhar scored 51 runs off 41 balls with four fours and one six, but Brook was all guns blazing as he went rampant in a 49-ball not-out ton with five sixes and 10 fours.

Despite the top-order failure, brilliant innings from Fakhar and Brook helped Lahore reach 197.

While in terms of bowling for United, Faheem was brilliant with figures of 3-28 in his four overs, Liam Dawson took 1-21 in three overs. Pacer Waqas Maqsood went to the cleaners as he conceded 45 runs in four overs.

Lahore Qalandars: Fakhar Zaman, Sohail Akhtar, Kamran Ghulam Mohammad Hafeez, Phil Salt (wk), Harry Brook, David Wiese, Rashid Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi (c), Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan

Islamabad United: Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Mubasir Khan, Danish Aziz, Liam Dawson, Asif Ali (c), Azam Khan (wk), Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Wasim, Waqas Maqsood, Zahir Khan

PSL 07: Multan Sultans set 246 runs target for Quetta Gladiators
Multan Sultans won the toss and chose to bat first against Quetta Gladiators in the 19th match of seventh edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) being played at Qaddafi Stadium Lahore.

Multan Sultans lost their first wicket on LBW, bowled by Irfan Khan in the 11th over.

In the previous match, Multan Sultans’ skipper Mohammad Rizwan led from the front as his side overcame a stiff challenge from the winless Karachi Kings to register their seventh win out of eight round matches in the 23rd match of the PSL 7 played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Wasim Akram 'scolding' Babar Azam was the last thing Karachi Kings fans needed

Wasim Akram and Babar Azam
Karachi Kings fans might be some of the unhappiest people on Earth these days.

Their team has been knocked out of the PSL 7 play-offs and after Wednesday night's seven-wicket loss to the Multan Sultans, the Kings now have eight consecutive defeats in a row, a first in PSL history.

As if things weren't bad enough, fans saw their favourite captain, Babar Azam, being apparently told off by franchise president Wasim Akram as a camera focused on the two mid-game. Suffice to say moods turned even more sour after that.

Akram and Azam were caught talking on camera, with Akram gesturing towards the field and Azam throwing his hands up in defeat. People interpreted it as Akram scolding Azam.

The former cricketer responded to the pictures on Twitter, saying the situation was blown out of proportion. "What I was saying was ‘why our bowlers are not bowling yorkers or slower ones offside off’. Nothing else . Babar is a wonderful boy and has tried his best. And what he wants for dinner," he wrote.

Cutting, Tanvir fined 15pc match fees for using ‘offensive’ gesture during PSL match

Cutting, Tanvir
Ben Cutting and Sohail Tanveer have been fined 15 per cent of their match fees for “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting” in separate incidents during a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between their respective sides on Tuesday.

“Ben Cutting of Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators’ Sohail Tanvir have both been fined 15 per cent of their match fees for breaching a Level 1 offence of the HBL PSL code of conduct in separate incidents during their side’s match in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2022,” a statement by the Pakistan Cricket Board said.

"Both the players were found to have violated Article 2.6 of the HBL PSL code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which relates to 'using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during a PSL Match,'" the statement added.

The incident involving Cutting happened in the penultimate over of Zalmi’s innings when the batter, after hitting the bowler for a third consecutive six, made inappropriate gestures using his fingers, the PCB said, adding that Tanvir had made a similar gesture after catching Cutting off Naseem Shah on the first ball of the final over.

The episode saw Cutting, after hitting three sixes, turning to Tanvir, the bowler, and raising both middle fingers. Tanvir seemed to laugh it off, but after Cutting hit another six the two engaged in what seemed like a heated conversation.

A few balls later, Cutting's attempt at another six landed straight in Tanvir's hands and Tanvir celebrated by flipping him off.

"Both Cutting and Sohail pled guilty to the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed to be imposed by match referee Ali Naqvi and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing," the PCB statement said.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Rashid Riaz, third umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Waleed Yaqoob.

All first-time offences of Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official warning and/or imposition of a fine of up to 25 per cent of the applicable match fee.

The statement also quoted Naqvi as saying: “Such type of inappropriate gestures have no space in this great sport. The players need to always understand and remember their on and off the field responsibilities as they are role models and behaviour like this sends out a wrong message to the younger generation of cricketers."

"The HBL PSL 2022 is being played in good, positive spirits and I would like to see the players continue to fight hard inside the field of play but at the same time to remain within the parameters of the spirit of the game,” he added.

Novak Djokovic 'not anti-vax' but would rather skip events than be forced into jab

Novak Djokovic
World number one Novak Djokovic has claimed he is not anti-vaccination but would rather skip Grand Slams than be forced to get a Covid jab.

The Serbian was deported in extraordinary circumstances on the eve of last month's Australian Open where Rafael Nadal won a record 21st Grand Slam trophy to move ahead of Djokovic and Roger Federer on the all-time men's list.

Djokovic was asked in an interview with the BBC, published on Tuesday, if he would sacrifice taking part in events such as Wimbledon and the French Open over his stance on the vaccine.

“Yes, that is the price that I'm willing to pay,” Djokovic said, referring to giving up his chance to become the leading men's Grand Slam winner.

Djokovic said he did not want to be associated with the anti-vax movement, but supported an individual's right to choose.

“I was never against vaccination,” he said, adding he had received vaccines as a child. “But I've always supported the freedom to choose what you put in your body.”

“The principles of decision making on my body are more important than any title or anything else,” he said.

“I'm trying to be in tune with my body as much as I possibly can.”

Djokovic arrived in Melbourne in January for the first Grand Slam of the year claiming he had obtained a medical exemption to enter the country without being vaccinated as he had recently recovered from Covid-19.

But Australian border officials said he did not meet requirements to be exempted from strict vaccination rules, his visa was cancelled and a protracted legal appeal failed.

In his first interview since leaving Melbourne, Djokovic said he hoped vaccination requirements would change and that he could “play for many more years”.

Djokovic said he was keeping an open mind about being vaccinated in the future “because we are all trying to find collectively, a best possible solution to end Covid."

“I was never against vaccination. I understand that globally, everyone is trying to put a big effort into handling this virus and seeing, hopefully, an end soon to this virus.”

Djokovic said he was “sad” with how events played out in Australia, where he spent days in detention at a notorious immigration hotel.

“I was really sad and disappointed with the way it all ended for me in Australia,” he said. “It wasn't easy.

“The reason why I was deported from Australia was because the minister for immigration used his discretion to cancel my visa based on his perception that I might create some anti-vax sentiment in the country or in the city, which I completely disagree with. “

PSL 7 : United to take on Gladiators today at Gaddafi Stadium

PSL 7 : United to take on Gladiators today at Gaddafi Stadium
Two-time champions Islamabad United will lock horns with Quetta Gladiators in their first match of the Lahore-leg of the ongoing seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.

After suffering a setback against United in their last fixture, Gladiators will be aiming to make amends in this match.

However, it is pertinent to mention here that Gladiators have suffered a major blow after Mohammad Nawaz was ruled out of the tournament following an injury. However, they will take heart at Jason Roy's return to the team, who hit a blistering century in their last match against Lahore Qalandars.

Meanwhile, two-time champions Islamabad United seem to be confident ahead of the clash as they aim to strengthen their position on the points table, where they are currently standing at third position with six points.

So far, 14 matches have been played between the two sides, with Quetta Gladiators taking victory in seven matches and Islamabad United emerging victorious in seven.

The match starts at 07:30 PM (PST).

PSL 7: Undefeated Sultans to take on Qalandars today

PSL 7: Undefeated Sultans to take on Qalandars today
Lahore Qalandars will aim to break the undefeated run of Multan Sultans today when they take on the defending champions in Match 17 of the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on their home ground.

Mohammad Rizwan and Co have beaten all the other teams — Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Quetta Gladiators, Peshawar Zalmi, and Islamabad United — in the ongoing tournament and have become the first team to qualify for the play-offs.

According to sources, Multan Sultans David Willey’s participation in today’s match is doubtful. The foreign player wasn’t a part of the playing XI on Thursday in the clash against Peshawar Zalmi. Per reports, Willey is suffering from stomach issues.

The franchise spokesperson confirmed that Willey is feeling unwell.

Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars have played five matches and won three. They have six points on the table.

The match will take place under the lights of Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore at 7:30pm.

Multan Sultans register sixth straight win after thumping Peshawar Zalmi

Multan Sultans register sixth straight win after thumping Peshawar Zalmi
Mohammd Rizwan-led Multan Sultans defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 42 runs to register their sixth consecutive win in the 16th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Chasing a 183-run target, the Zalmi never looked comfortable as both Kamran Akmal and Liam Livingstone were sent back to the pavilion in the first six overs.

Both Sultans and Zalmi were playing their second fixtures against each other today.

Sultans continued to strike on regular intervals as the Zalmi were clueless in crafting the run-chase. Soon afterwards, the Wahab Riaz-led team looked in sheer turmoil.

Experienced all-rounder Shoaib Malik played a good knock of 44 runs and remained the highest scorer for his team. Malik tried to bring Zalmi closer to the target by smashing some boundaries, but the task for him was humongous against a brilliant Sultans attack that restricted the Zalmi to 140 at the loss of 10 wickets.

In terms of bowling, Khushdil Shah and Blessing Muzarabani were once against the stand-out bowlers for their team as they took three wickets each, while Shahnawaz Dahani dismissed two batters.

Abbas Afridi and Imran Tahir picked one wicket each.

Sultan's innings

The in-from Sultans were invited to bat first by Zalmi skipper Wahab Riaz and they handed a 183-run target.

Sultans posted the total courtesy of Shan Masood’s terrific 68 runs and Tim David's sensational 34 runs off 18 balls. Their openers Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan provided them with a 98-run opening stand.

Rizwan scored 34 runs, as he didn't look in the flow today, but Masood continued his rich form by playing a 68-run inning of 49 balls with the help of eight fours and one six which provided a solid foundation for other batters to launch an onslaught against the Zalmi bowlers in the late overs.

For Zalmi, experienced all-rounder Shoaib Malik was economical as he conceded only nine runs in two overs.

Salman Irshad, Wahab Riaz and Saqib Mahmood took two wickets each, but they were also smashed badly.

Mohammad Rizwan-led Sultans have beaten all the other teams — Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Quetta Gladiators, Peshawar Zalmi, and Islamabad United — in the PSL 2022.

Playing XI:

Multan Sultans: Shan Masood, Mohammad Rizwan (c)(wk), Sohaib Maqsood, Rilee Rossouw, Tim David, Khushdil Shah, Anwar Ali, Abbas Afridi, Imran Tahir, Blessing Muzarabani, Shahnawaz Dahani

Peshawar Zalmi: Kamran Akmal (wk), Liam Livingstone, Haider Ali, Shoaib Malik, Sherfane Rutherford, Ben Cutting, Hussain Talat, Wahab Riaz (c), Saqib Mahmood, Mohammad Umar, Salman Irshad

Australia name full-strength Test squad for Pakistan tour

Australia name full-strength Test squad for Pakistan tour
Australia have named a full-strength line-up for next month's three-Test tour of Pakistan in their first squad announcement since the resignation of Justin Langer as coach.

The Australians will play in Pakistan for the first time in almost 25 years and the series will be the Test side's first overseas tour since facing England in the 2019 Ashes series.

Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood returns from injury while Scott Boland, one of the stand-out performers during Australia's 4-0 Ashes series win over England earlier in the season, retains his place in the Pat Cummins-captained squad.

Concerns that senior players would pull out of the tour due to security issues after both England and New Zealand withdrew from tours of Pakistan late last year have proven unfounded.

No Australian team has travelled to Pakistan since 1998.

“This squad covers for all scenarios including the conditions given it has been such a long time since Australia was last in Pakistan,” said selector George Bailey.

“With several sub-continent tours and a one-day World Cup in India on the near horizon, this is a great first-up challenge for the group after the successful home Ashes series.

“It's also a very historic tour given the length of time since an Australian side last toured Pakistan.”

Ashton Agar is the only player included in the squad who did not feature in the Ashes series, which served as Langer's last in charge before his resignation on Saturday.

The Australians will be led during the tour by interim coach Andrew McDonald.

The first Test will start in Rawalpindi on March 4, with the second meeting slated for Karachi on March 12. Lahore will host the final Test from March 21.

The two countries will also play three One Day Internationals and one Twenty20 match.

Australia's squad for those encounters will be announced separately.

Australia Test squad: Pat Cummins (c), Ashton Agar, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, David Warner

Shahid Afridi is opening up his own restaurant in Dubai

Shahid Afridi
We have seen Shahid Afridi with a bat and ball but an apron was the last thing we had expected him to put on. The cricketer’s newest venture may be opening his own restaurant.

He shared a video of himself in a chef's jacket, slicing tomatoes and showing off some of his culinary skills. The cricketer is opening a restaurant in Dubai that will offer authentic desi food to people residing in the city.

Afridi, who is currently playing for the Quetta Gladiators this PSL season, shared the news with a video and wrote, "one step closer to the big announcement". He said he will be revealing other details very soon.

"Get ready to give your taste buds a mouthwatering triple tarka," Afridi wrote in his post along with hashtags of his restaurant's name, Lala Darbar.

The business page says that it is an "authentic desi restaurant chain" by the cricketer. Details such as the location or menu haven’t been revealed yet.

Of course a restaurant by an athlete means it will have a touch of the sportsman's passion for cricket and we can already see that in the logo of his restaurant. His famous victory pose made it to the restaurant's banner but the intriguing part is always the menu, the names of the dishes and if they will be named after him. Will we be getting a Lala karhai with a side of Boom Boom naan?

Afridi also has a skincare line called Ooh Lala which is marketed as a premium quality range that offers quality personal care products. He also owns a clothing brand called Hope Not Out that has leisurewear for both men and women.

Afridi isn’t the only Pakistani athlete to have ventured into food-related businesses. Inzamam Ul Haq, Saeed Anwar and Shoaib Malik have all dipped their toes in the food business too. Haq and Anwar run a meat store by the name Meat One that offers fresh and healthy meat whereas Malik opened a restaurant in Lahore called The Rice Bowl which offers comfort food.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Portuguese star footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has set another record as his Instagram followers reached the 400 million mark, making him the first person ever to reach the milestone.

Even before surpassing 400 million, the Manchester United footballer was still the most followed celebrity on Instagram with a count of over 3 million. However, Ronaldo's Instagram following witnessed a major leap a day after he celebrated his 37th birthday.

Ronaldo shared a glimpse of his 37th birthday celebrations with partner Georgina Rodríguez.

The Portuguese footballer took to Instagram and shared a sweet photo celebrating his birthday with the ladylove.

He posted the picture with a lovely caption, “Life is a roller coaster. Hard work, high speed, urgent goals, demanding expectations… But in the end, it all comes down to family, love, honesty, friendship, values that make it all worth it.”

The star footballer has 3,242 posts, with an average of 10 million likes for each post. The celebrity himself follows only 500 Instagram accounts.

After Ronaldo, American celebrity Kylie Jenner is the second most-followed person on Instagram with over 308million followers. Whereas, the top footballer Lionel Messi ranks third with 306 million Instagram followers
