Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi among nominees for ICC Men's Player of the Year award

Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi
Ace batsman-wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan and star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi have been included among four nominees for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for International Cricket Council's (ICC) Men's Player of the Year, the world cricket body announced on Friday.

The other two nominees are England captain Joe Root and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, the ICC said in a statement.

Shaheen — the man on fire

Elaborating on the achievements of the players, the ICC noted that Shaheen took 78 wickets in 36 international matches this year at an average of 22.20 runs. He also delivered his career-best figures in an innings this year in August against the West Indies, grabbing six wickets for 51 runs.

"The tall Pakistani pacer was on fire throughout 2021, knocking some of the best batters over across all three formats of the game. He especially had a year to remember in Tests and T20Is, reaching his absolute peak during the T20 World Cup in UAE where he impressed one and all with his sheer speed and skills," the statement said.

"He ruled the shortest format throughout the calendar year, scalping 23 wickets in 21 matches with his death bowling improving by leaps and bounds," it added.

The statement made special mention of Shaheen's performance against India in the T20 World Cup where it was the pacer's double-wicket salvo up top that put India on the backfoot early and set the tone for the entire match.

It also recalled Indian captain Virat Kohli's post-match statement in which he had heaped praise on Shaheen, saying: "He put our batsmen under pressure immediately with the new ball, and he ran in with intensity and showed that he's bowling in consistent areas, so as batsmen you are forced to be a bit watchful.

"That spell kind of put us on the back foot immediately, and from there on to get those extra 20, 25 runs, in the end, seemed pretty difficult when you lose three wickets for 20 runs."

Rizwan the dependable

Ever-reliable batsman for Pakistan, Rizwan accrued 1,915 runs in 44 international matches this year at an average of 56.32 and racked up 56 dismissals behind the stumps.

"The Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter ruled the roost in 2021 when it came to the shortest format of the game. Aggregating a staggering 1,326 runs in only 29 matches, Rizwan struck at an average of 73.66 and a strike rate of 134.89. Apart from his exploits with the bat, he was as solid as ever behind the stumps," the statement said.

Praising Rizwan's consistency, the ICC statement noted that he had also improved his Test performances this year, gathering 455 runs in nine matches at an average of 45.50.

According to the ICC's statement, Rizwan's most memorable performance also came during Pakistan's match against India, with the batsman hitting 79 on only 55 deliveries, including six fours and three sixes.

"He ensured that there were no hiccups in the run-chase as Pakistan galloped towards the target without losing a single wicket to seal a 10-wicket victory. Rizwan would continue this form throughout the remainder of the tournament, scoring 281 runs and ending as the third-highest run-scorer," it added.

The ICC also recalled Rizwan's performance in Pakistan's semi-final against Australia in which he top-scored for the Green Shirts with 67 from 52 balls. During his innings, Rizwan had become the first player to score 1,000 runs in T20 internationals in a calendar year.

Officials had revealed after the match that Rizwan was in hospital with a severe chest infection before taking the field in the semi-final.

Saying Rizwan has a "character of steel", the statement recalled coach Matthew Hayden's post-match talk in which he said, "[Rizwan] is a warrior. He has been brilliant through it (the campaign) and he's got great courage."

A day earlier, the ICC announced the nominees for the ODI Player of the Year award, with Pakistan skipper Babar Azam one of four contenders for the accolade.

According to the ICC, its Voting Academy which comprises global cricket journalists and broadcasters will vote for their first, second and third choices. The world cricket body will also take fans' votes into consideration. The winner will be decided by combining the results of the Voting Academy and fans' votes.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly hospitalised after contracting COVID-19

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has been admitted to hospital after testing positive for Covid-19, a senior doctor said on Tuesday.

Ganguly, who underwent minor heart surgery in January, was admitted on Monday suffering from a mild fever, a senior doctor of the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata said.

“His condition is stable. There is no cause for alarm at the moment,” the medic told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“Ganguly has been advised by a team of medical experts of the hospital because of some pre-existing health condition.”

The India Today news website reported that his samples had been sent for genome sequencing to confirm whether he had contracted the Omicron variant or not.

The 49-year-old, one of India's most popular players ever and who now heads the country's cricket board, was admitted to hospital twice in early 2021 with chest pain and underwent an angioplasty.

India, which suffered a devastating Covid-19 wave in April, has so far confirmed around 650 Omicron infections and several states have imposed restrictions on gatherings.

Australia scent victory as England collapse again in 3rd Test

Australia scent victory as England collapse again in 3rd Test
A dazed England lost four wickets in a hostile late spell to leave them still trailing by 51 runs and fighting to stave off defeat Monday at stumps on day two of a gripping third Ashes Test against Australia.

It came after the visitors — who must win in Melbourne — were rocked by four positive Covid cases in their camp, although no players were among them.

Australia were all out for 267, earning an 82-run lead on England's first-innings 185 on an MCG pitch that was still offering plenty for the bowlers.

Marcus Harris top-scored with a battling 76 against a dangerous English attack led by veteran Jimmy Anderson, who was at his fearsome best with 4-33 off 23 overs.

After heavy defeats in Brisbane and Adelaide, England must win to keep the five-Test series alive, with Australia only needing a draw to retain the urn as holders.

But faced with surviving the final hour against a revvm,ed-up Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, England collapsed again, slumping to 31 for four at the close.

Struggling opener Zak Crawley never looked comfortable and after dodging 15 balls he was caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey for five off Starc.

Dawid Malan came in but incredibly was out the first ball to Starc lbw after an unsuccessful review, then Scott Boland ruined Haseeb Hameed's day on seven, with Carey gloving an edge.

Fired up, Boland bowled Jack Leach without scoring two balls to leave skipper Joe Root unbeaten on 12 and Ben Stokes on two — and England in deep trouble.

England earlier took their chances with the key wickets of Marnus Labuschagne (1) and Steve Smith (16), along with nightwatchman Nathan Lyon, before lunch.

Harris (76) and Travis Head (27) surrendered in the second session before England mopped up the rest.

Australia resumed on 61 for one with the maligned Harris, who started on 20, under pressure after a poor series so far.

But he hung on grimly as Australian wickets tumbled around him to repay the faith of coach Justin Langer by bringing up only his third 50 in 13 Tests, and his first in two years.

He then fell on 76 with the brilliant Anderson enticing an edge that Root took at slip.

Head, who made a swashbuckling 152 at the first Test in Brisbane, compiled a good-looking 27 before flailing at a probing Ollie Robinson ball, also caught by Root to snap a 60-run stand with Harris.

Play began half an hour late after Covid drama in the England camp, with the team forced to undergo urgent rapid antigen tests as they were about to leave for the MCG.

All players came back negative, but two support staff and two family members tested positive.

Coronavirus impacted the second Test at Adelaide with Australian captain Cummins ruled out just before the start for being in close contact with a positive Covid-19 case.

When play started, Lyon didn't last, hitting 10 before prodding at a full-length Robinson delivery to Jos Buttler behind the stumps.

Harris smacked an early boundary off Anderson, but was cautious. He survived a review decision on 36 after being given out lbw and a difficult stumping on 63 before his luck finally ran out.

Labuschagne, the new number one Test batsman, had a rare failure, undone by the pace of Mark Wood, edging to Root on one in a massive moment for a resurgent England.

Harris was joined by the usually reliable Smith, who made 16 before being bowled by Anderson to leave the match finely poised.

Head also succumbed to the safe hands of Root, off Robinson, then Leach trapped Cameron Green lbw for 17.

Stokes removed Carey, also for 17, before late cameos from Cummins and Starc added valuable extra runs.

Pakistan edge India in thriller to reach U-19 Asia Cup semis

Pakistan edge India in thriller to reach U-19 Asia Cup semis
Fast bowler Zeeshan Zemeer’s five-wicket haul backed by a fine 81-run knock by Mohammad Shehzad steered Pakistan to a nail-biting two-wicket victory over arch-rivals India in their group ‘A’ match of the U-19 Asia Cup in Dubai on Saturday.

Chasing 238 for victory, Pakistan achieved their target off the very last ball when Ahmed Khan drove Indian pacer Ravi Kumar for a boundary.

Earlier, right-handed Shehzad played a fighting knock off 105 balls while striking five sixes and four fours.

At 230-7, Pakistan required eight runs for victory in the final over. On the first ball of the over, Pakistan lost Zeeshan, who was the wrecker-in-chief of the Indian innings with five wickets, for a duck to Ravi. But Ahmed (29 not out) with Ali Asfand (1 not out) survived the tense moments and achieved the target on the last ball.

Besides Shehzad and Ahmed, other notable scorers for Pakistan were Maaz Sadaqat (29, four fours), Irfan Khan (32, three fours) and Rizwan Mehmood (29).

For India, pacer Raj Bawa was the main wicket-taker with four for 56.

Earlier after being put into bat, India made a moderate total of 237 all out in 49 overs. Wicket-keeper/batsman Aaradhya Yadav top-scored with an 83-ball 50 containing three fours while opener Harnoor Singh made 46 off 59.

Right-armer Zeeshan was expensive conceding 60 runs in 10 overs but captured five wickets including that of Yadav. Awais Ali claimed 2-43 in his eight overs.

Shehzad for his brilliant match-winning innings was named man-of-the-match.

Pakistan have remained unbeaten so far in the event winning both their matches to lead the group ‘A’ table with four points.

India are second on net-run-rate basis followed by Afghanistan; both have two points each and they are to play each other in the last match, which will decide the second semi-finalist from this group.

In their next match Pakistan face the UAE on Monday.

From group ‘B’, Bangladesh have also qualified for the semi-finals as top team while second-placed Sri Lanka (two points) have bright chances to qualify for the semi-finals. Sri Lanka are to face as to face Nepal and Kuwait in their remaining group matches.

Man Utd close to full strength after Covid outbreak: Rangnick

Man Utd close to full strength after Covid outbreak
Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has almost a full squad to choose from for Monday's Premier League clash at Newcastle after a Covid-19 outbreak saw their last two matches postponed.

Only the injured Paul Pogba is unavailable to the interim manager for the Red Devils first game in 16 days.

United's games against Brentford and Brighton were among the 12 Premier League games to be called off over the past two weeks due to a wave of coronavirus infections as Britain battles record case numbers.

"The last training session we had eight outfield players and three goalkeepers and then we closed down the training ground in order to break the chain," said Rangnick on Thursday.

"Today was the third day of training this week and we had 25 outfield players. Paul Pogba is still the only one missing out, everyone (else) was on board."

Rangnick added that the vast majority of those to have Covid had little or no symptoms, which allowed them to remain in shape while training from home.

"The development of the last week was extremely positive. As far as I could see in training they are all in good shape," he added.

"They did their homework. They all have their schedule to train at home.

"They stick to that schedule and programme and from what I saw in training most of them - if not all of them - might be available."

The fixture congestion caused by a series of postponements has again raised concerns over player welfare.

Rangnick backed the calls of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for the reintroduction of five substitutions to ease the burden.

The Premier League was one of the few top European leagues to revert to three changes after five substitutes were allowed for the end of the 2019/20 season when play resumed after a three-month break caused by the pandemic.

"I think it was the right decision to have more options to change players to save energy for players, especially if they have just recovered from Covid," said Rangnick.

"The same is true right now. We have a similar situation to one-and-a-half years ago, so I see no reason why it shouldn't be the same now.

"As far as I know in Europe, England is the only country that only allows three subs. In the other four big leagues in Europe you can substitute five players."

And he also suggested the League Cup could be scrapped to create extra space in the calendar.

Klopp and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte have requested that their League Cup semi-finals against Arsenal and Chelsea respectively be changed from two-legged tie to one-off games.

"England is the only top league that plays two cup competitions. In France they abolished the second one," said Rangnick. "We are the only country that plays two cup competitions, this is something we could speak about and discuss."

Will not rest until Pakistan beats Australia in Australia: Ramiz Raja

Will not rest until Pakistan beats Australia in Australia: Ramiz Raja
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja Wednesday said he would not "rest" till Pakistan does not become a world-class team and beats Australia at their home turf.

The former Pakistan captain and PCB chairman was addressing a press conference in Karachi with newly-appointed CEO Faisal Hasnain. Raja spoke on a wide range of issues, including the dismal attendance during the recently-held Pakistan-West Indies series, the need for permanent coaches and team selection.

The PCB chairman said that the team was on an impressive trajectory but acknowledged that "more work needs to be done."

"Pakistan has to improve its fielding a lot," he noted. "I have been working at the PCB for the past three months yet it feels like 30 years have passed. I now realise that holidays are a huge blessing."

Raja spoke about his performance so far as the PCB chairman, saying that he raised his voice at the Asian Cricket Council after New Zealand and England withdrew from the Pakistan tour.

"I said during the meeting that if any Asian country is mistreated, everyone should raise their voices against it," he disclosed.

The PCB chairman said that he did not have any "final opinion" when it comes to coaches. "We would be trapped if we roped in coaches for long-term contracts. We need specialists, not coaches," he added.

The former Pakistan cricketer said that it would be better if coaches were employed at the basic level to groom future stars, adding that no decision had been taken to either appoint a local or foreign coach yet.
The PCB chairman spoke about Pakistani leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who was named in the FIR of a minor's rape. Without taking his name, Raja said that the PCB has a "no tolerance policy" in such matters and that an investigation is underway to uncover the truth related to the case.

Ramiz Raja said that the players representing Pakistan are on ambassadorial positions, adding that they have been trained who to pick and socialise with.

He said that the players' salaries have been increased so that they can stay in five-star accommodations where there are no distractions.

"Each player earns Rs50 to 60 lac per month," he disclosed.

However, he stated that the PCB plans to invite scholars to give players lectures on morality.

"We have invited Mustansar Hussain tarrar and Ashfaq Ahmed to talk to players on how to handle fame and [educate them] that making money should not be their focus. We need to work on them more," he added.

Additionally, Chairman PCB, said that the media made headlines on the case prematurely.

"There should be an investigation first. This period should have been a calming period," he observed, calling on the media to play a more responsible role when such incidents occur.

Shoaib Malik is super proud of nephew Muhammad Huraira's first-class triple ton

Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Huraira
Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik on Tuesday lauded his nephew, Muhammad Huraira, for becoming the second-youngest Pakistani cricketer to score a first-class triple century after veteran cricketer Javed Miandad.

Taking to Twitter, Shoaib Malik said he feels extremely proud of Huraira for this achievement.

Saying that there is still much more for Huraira to achieve, Shoaib Malik wished the young cricketer all the best and advised him never to stop working hard and going strong.

"I am very proud of you @therealhurraira on becoming the second Pakistani young cricketer to score triple century, you have a long way to go. Keep working hard and and keep going strong, all the best," Shoaib wrote on Twitter.

Huraira was ecstatic to receive praise from star cricketer Shoaib Malik.

Pakistan may be about to witness the rise of a new batting talent as 19-year-old Mohammad Huraira reached a milestone on the third day of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match where Northern is playing against Balochistan.

The Sialkot-born top-order batter achieved this feat in his maiden first-class season. He had scored two centuries before this landmark performance.

The triple century by Huraira came in only 327 deliveries making it one of the quickest first-class triple centuries.

The Pakistani youngster is the ninth teenager in the world to smash a triple ton first-class cricket and the second Pakistani after Javed Miandad to score a triple century at 17.

He is also the eighth youngest batter, overall, to achieve this feat.

Shaheen Afridi promises to perform his best for Lahore Qalandars in PSL 2022

Shaheen Shah Afridi
Pakistan's pace bowling sensation, Shaheen Shah Afridi, who will now captain Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars, has pledged to take the team ahead and perform his best, both in bowling and captaining.

Lahore Qalandars have named Shaheen Afridi their captain for the seventh edition of the PSL.

"Our team has good openers and the middle order is also the best," the star bowler said.

Shaheen said that there shouldn't be an impression that fast bowlers cannot lead a team as the captain since bowlers, including Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, have served as the captain for the national squad in the past.

He said that he has always received respect from Lahore Qalandars and tried to perform well for the team.

"It's an honour [for me] that I'm captaining the team which I started the PSL with," said Shaheen while expressing gratitude towards the franchise.

Shaheen took to Twitter to thank Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana and other officials for giving him the opportunity.

Earlier, Shaheen had said that he is looking forward to captaining Lahore Qalandars in the PSL if given the opportunity.

He had lauded the management of Lahore Qalandars during a virtual press conference, hailing it as "exceptionally good."

"It's thrilling to perform for the Lahore Qalandars, I've been playing with them for a number of years," he had said.

Pakistan thrash Bangladesh to set up South Korea semi-final clash in Asian Champions Trophy

Pakistan thrash Bangladesh
A thumping 6-2 victory against Bangladesh saw Pakistan get their first victory of the Asian Champions Trophy, jumping up to third in the table and setting up a semi-final against South Korea.

Pakistan went into their last round-robin game knowing that a two-goal victory would see them leapfrog third-placed Japan, who were hammered 6-0 by India earlier in the day.

But doubles Aijaz Ahmed and Ahmed Nadeem and goals apiece by Afraz and Mohammad Razzaq saw them clinch a four-goal victory with Bangladesh getting both their goals through Arshad Hosein.

Pakistan edged Japan on goal difference after both finished level on five points, one point behind second-placed South Korea while India topped the standings with 10 points.

Bangladesh went into the game having lost their first three matches and knew they had to upset Pakistan in order to make the semi-finals.

Arshad gave them a shock 13th-minute lead only for Ahmed to level matters in the very next minute.

It was the start of Pakistan’s goal rush which saw them score a further four goals in the next 20 minutes.

Aijaz made it 2-1 in the 18th before Afraz got his goal in the 24th. Ahmed got his second goal two minutes later with Razzaq making it 4-1 in the 34th.

Arshad pulled one back for Bangladesh in the 34th but Aijaz sealed victory for his side four minutes later.

Earlier, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to give India a 10th minute lead against Japan and Dilpreet Singh made it 2-0 in the 23rd.

Jarmanpreet Singh added the third in the 34th before goals by Sumit, Harmanpreet and Shamsher Singh in the space of seven minutes completed a resounding victory for India.

Japan have work to do if they are to avoid another hammering by India when they meet the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallists in the semi-final on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s match with South Korea on the same day is expected to be a much evenly-contested one after they played a 3-3 draw against each other on Saturday.

New Zealand to tour Pakistan twice in 2022-23 to make up for series abandoned due to 'security threat'

New Zealand to tour Pakistan twice in 2022-23
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Monday that New Zealand will tour Pakistan twice in 2022-23 to "make up for" the tour it abandoned in September this year, hours before the first match was scheduled to begin.

In a statement, the PCB said the Black Caps will initially tour Pakistan from December 2022 to January 2023 during which they will play two Test matches and three one-day internationals (ODIs) as part of the Future Tours Programme. "The two Tests and three ODIs will be part of the ICC World Test Championship and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League, respectively," the statement added.

New Zealand will then tour again in April 2023 when they will play 10 white-ball matches — five ODIs and five Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) — that will count towards the teams' ICC rankings.

The arrangements for the tours were finalised after meetings between PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Chairman Martin Snedden, the statement said.

The two boards will continue to work together to finalise the series dates, which will be announced in due course, the PCB stated.

Reacting to the development, Raja said he was pleased with the outcomes of the discussions and negotiations with NZC and thanked the board's chairman for their "understanding and support".

"This reflects the strong, cordial and historic relations the two boards have and reconfirms Pakistan's status as an important member of the cricket fraternity," the statement quoted Raja as saying.

Meanwhile, NZC Chief Executive David White said, "it's good to be going back," adding that the board had fruitful and constructive conversations with Pakistan cricket authorities in Dubai which had "further strengthened the bond" between NZC and PCB.

The latest announcement means Pakistan will host eight Tests, 11 ODIs and 13 T20Is against Australia, England and New Zealand in the period from March 2022 to April 2023, according to the PCB.

The New Zealand cricket team had arrived in Pakistan on September 11 for the first time in 18 years to play three ODIs and five Twenty20 Internationals.

The Kiwis had, however, devastated Pakistan's cricket fraternity on Sept 17 by opting out of their tour of Pakistan minutes before the first ODI was to be played. They had cited a 'security threat' as the reason without divulging any further information. The tour cancellation was followed by England also deferring their tour.

New Zealand Cricket Chief Executive White had later said that he had "no option" but to abandon the tour of Pakistan after receiving advice from the New Zealand government of a 'specific, credible threat'.

The PCB had said that Pakistan had "foolproof security arrangements for all visiting teams" and had "assured NZC of the same".

In October, the PCB chairman had announced that the New Zealand cricket board was working on a new schedule to tour Pakistan.

PSL 7: Franchises allowed to induct more players

PSL 7: Franchises allowed to induct more players
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has allowed Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises to induct more players into the squad for the tournament's seventh edition.

The board has allowed the franchises to move the cap up from 18 to 20 players, while the two additions should either be domestic or a combination of domestic and foreign, sources said.

However, the franchises will not be allowed to induct two foreign players. The selection of the additional players will be done next month, just days before the league begins — on January 27. The PSL draft took place last week.

The decision was taken after the PSL franchises had requested the PCB to increase the team players, given the uncertainty due to the current coronavirus situation, sources said.

PCB also aims to increase the importance of domestic players through the decision, sources added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the ODI series between Pakistan and West Indies — scheduled from Dec 18-22 — was postponed after several Windies players tested positive for COVID-19 during the three-match T20 series.

After the announcement, PCB Chief Operating Office Salman Naseer said that although there was "no breach of the biosecure bubble at all," but the board had become extra cautious for PSL.

Pak vs WI: ODI series postponed to early June after COVID-19 setback

Pakistan and west indiescricket team
The ODI series between Pakistan and West Indies — scheduled from Dec 18-22 — has been postponed to and rescheduled for early June 2022, after several Windies players tested positive for COVID-19 during the ongoing three-match T20 series.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Cricket West Indies (CWI), in a joint statement, said the decision was made after considering both the teams’ welfare as well as limited resources in the West Indies side for the ODIs.

Five more positive cases were reported in the West Indies camp following Wednesday’s PCR testing, raising the total number of positive cases to nine since their arrival in Karachi on December 9, the statement said.

The third and final match of the T20I series was hanging in the balance after several players tested positive for COVID-19, but later it resumed as the fresh round of tests came back negative.

The postponement of the series — which was a part of the Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League — will provide the West Indies with an equal opportunity to field their best available players for the World Cup qualification matches, the statement said.

The West Indies team members, who returned negative results following Wednesday’s PCR and today’s Rapid Antigen tests, will depart from Pakistan after tonight’s match, the statement said.

Those who have tested positive will complete their isolation in Karachi before their travel arrangements are finalised to allow them to rejoin their families in time for Christmas celebrations, it said.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan team members, all of whom have returned PCR negative after Wednesday’s tests, will also be leaving the "Managed Event Environment" after tonight’s T20I.

“The CWI would like to thank the PCB for its excellent series arrangements and appreciates its support in rescheduling the ODI series in June 2022," the statement added.
